Richard Hughes

Liverpool FC.
One of the biggest and most successful clubs in the world, highly rate Richard Hughes and employ him in a vital role.

Neil Dawson.
Poster on a forum, occasional guest on a local YouTube channel, employed by the brewing industry and an expert on Hughes.

Now who do you think knows best?
I hope it’s Neil Dawson.

I hate seeing the bin dippers do well.

Yes, a club with top level stature. Could attract most Technical Directors/DOFs from around the globe.

No doubt they plucked out any old candidate with little/no research, due diligence in such a pivotal role. Akin to choosing training cones to use in training. Or perhaps they rolled a few dice and thought he'd do.

No way it could be due to him being highly regarded in the game/extremely competent at what he does.

Fair points. But I dont get what the issue with Hughes is then?
My issues were his inability to find a manager with a good philosophy to build on Eddies legacies until the fifth attempt and that there were too many miss signings that will hurt us moving forwards as they will get taken into consideration for FFP.

There have been good signings and I like his current manager choice. I’ve never said everything he does is wrong. Just the balance in my opinion not good enough.

It’s only a black and white world when people paint it that way.

Yes, I do agree with you re the manager sourcing after Howe left.

I know others disagree, but imo they did make a right mess of that.

Worked out in the end, although with a deadly dull brand of football under Parker, despite having phenomenal squad.

Start to 2nd season was outstanding, looked resolute at back with Cahill... although we did seem to sit awfully deep defending 1 goal leads iirc.

Had god awful run as winter set in and almost cost us... but ultimately worked out ok.

Parkers ability to adapt and change tempo was p1ss poor imo. Recall frustrating home games, tapping it around with no real incision in final 3rd. Billing bailing us out with 'moments' of brilliance quite often.

They must have been aware of his brand of football after watching/keeping tabs on him so long.

I reckon seduced by his stature as player? Although tbf, although he wasnt particularly likeable I think he's likely very resolute, natural leader... given captaincy's he held over his playing career. No doubt that 'steel' appealed to the directors, as we needed someone to simply get us over the line.

I think Scott Parker was the right manager at the right time.

This is hilarious. You continually referred to him as Hughesless. I don't even need to trawl back through posts to recall that. Now you're Coming over as the voice of reason.

Agree, other options at the time didn’t excite. When we started trying to lure Parker from Fulham, Iraola wouldn’t have been on the radar and he probably wouldn’t have considered us in the second tier anyway. He may well have failed in the championship without that knowledge that Parker had.

Long term it didn’t work out for Parker and us, but he’s still a successful appointment…that had the potential for a philosophy over time, only Parker 2.0 got himself sacked.

Yes dont want to get too carried away with wading in about it, but message seemed quite clear to me re Hughes(less) over the past few years.

Eddies mate, incompetent, signings post Howe lukewarm to rubbish/paid over odds as he was riding coat tails/competence of Eddie and was now being found out.

That was his whole world view. Rely on having the better players to produce the 'moments' off their own back rather than systematically, and just point the whole system at containing all other variables on the pitch.

It worked, brilliantly for a while and not so much for a while, and at a lower level. We were useful for one another for that time period. He flushed it all away after promotion of course! But I struggle to call it a bad appointment.

AI is a totally different level of prospect. We're very lucky to have lured him IMHO and will need some succession plan sooner or later.

Yes, a decent DOF will be finger on the pulse now tbh.

Hopefully our stature increases, ie couple of top half finishes under AI, more decent players join in summer, it will make us an attractive proposition to other quality managers/head coaches.

You’re choosing to remember the bits you want to remember Rob, or banter.

I didn’t rate Hughes, I’m glad he’s gone and I’m in the camp of more miss than hit with his signings. Especially with the money he has spent. I’ve never said everyone he has signed is a miss there’s been some great signings. I also was over the moon we landed Iraola as is well documented on the early pages of the Iraola thread.
