I think Cargill was there as a necessity of having defensive options available there and was likely never seen as someone to bring on through choice. A bit like how Allsop ended up with a PL appearance or two.

Mings and A Smith have both made appearances from the bench despite being defenders. It's true that attackers will be changed more often as you chase a game but if a player is seen as a genuine option he will get a chance at some point.
 
Fraser's career didn't start with that game against Liverpool. He'd already made about 70 appearances for us in Lg 1 and the Championship
 
Brentford fans all rave about Mepham, think 20m is their valuation, which to me is too high for a fairly new Championship player. But they think he can go on to play at the very highest level. If Eddie feels the same [ which he obviously does ], I can see us getting him eventually.

Matchams was banger racing if memory serves, loads of old bangers on the way out (Defoe, Distin, Grant, Anderton) and a few Mini (Shaun) Coopers
 
Seems Eddie is still keen to bring Mepham in (according to the echo today). With a deal for Lerma likely to be completed could he be next?

The Mail, however, quote that Leicester have had a bid of £10 million for him rejected by Brentford, with them potentially having extra cash floating around if Maguire goes to Man Utd we could be outbid.

I think if we do land a central defender it would be a very successful summer of strengthening and certainly a position we do need an extra player.
