Lloyd Kelly

Once a player is in the last year of the contract, the money on offer is ridiculous given that the new club don’t have to pay a transfer fee. Didn’t someone on here say Lerma increased his wages massively and got an £8million signing on bonus? May have misremembered the figure, but it was a huge amount particularly in a profession where careers can be short.
Yes 8 million. It was me.

One for our resident @The Fish then. Direct competition for Dan Burn at CB / LB, without really fully specialist at either. Left of a back 3 probably his perfect position but that's a bit niche.

Probably a good deal for Newcastle, even if it's not going to set Geordie pulses racing. If they can get over the impression that a freebie from Bournemouth doesn't fit a certain expectation level they may have been going for in recent years. He should be a decent fit for them.

Awkward one for us because we may need to sign two players to replace him.
We're pretty pleased with the likelihood of getting a good deputy/replacement for Burn. Especially without impacting our PSR envelope significantly. Similar to the reported deal for Tosin from Fulham.

As I understand it, he's a good athlete, decent technique, can play CB or LB.

The consensus is that if we can fill two gaps at the back for next to nothing, it means that the majority of the PSR wriggle room can be spent on the traditionally more expensive positions like CF and RW.

Kelly gets injured a lot, though. That's the downside of him.

Tbf Kelly is absolutely perfect for that hybrid CB/LB role Dan burn plays.

It's a shame but was inevitable and honestly not as big a loss as it would've been a season or 2 ago now we have Zab, Senesi, Kerkez and even Dango.

I wish him well. Be interesting to see how he gets on. I still feel he lacks concentration game after game to be a top 6 player, but he'll make an excellent squad player for Newcastle. He clearly has the physical attributes and when he's on form he's excellent, but he also has a consistent track record of mistakes and switching off a bit. Maybe at a higher level his concentration levels will improve?

sounds like we've pushed as far a possible regarding the contract offer

like lerma, good luck to him if his agent has secured silly money elsewhere
decent enough but won't live long in my ex-player memory bank

Whilst I accept we'll obviously continue on ok without Kelly, I just can't accept the feeling that it's no loss... To lose one of our best CB/LB players (IMO) and for free also...

Yep, Kelly has his mistakes in him, but doesn't everyone? It just seems folks like to scrutinise Kelly for some reason... I too have occasionally been critical of Kelly and his style of play, but he is seemingly maturing into a very cultured player right now...

I just don't see how some folks can so easily dismiss his imminent departure as something that is 'no loss'... For me, he'll be a big boss, but the boo boys have obviously got there way on this one...

The boo boys haven't had their way......he wants to join a bigger club....all players have ambition....good luck to him imo......the fact is as good a player as he is he's not a first choice CB for us and he's holding back the development of Kerkez as a LB.....I think it's best for both parties if he moves on.

If he is that good...why hasn't he been a regular choice when free of injury ?

If its because he hasn't been too enamoured about turning out for a Tinpot club for any length of time and didn't show much enthusiasm to the various managers...then he is best gone...with no good grace given.

On the Forum, the comments during his time at the club have ranged quite widely between adulation and derision - it's all a bit confusing tbh.

How long will it be before he's in the England squad ?

IF he goes to Eddie's Newcastle.

C'mon on Bill make him THE offer he can't refuse.

Then he'll be another AFCB England player.

Just oozes CLASS.
I agree - a fantastic player who I've always rated ( the next Rio Ferdinand I did say once ... I know Zigger Zagger, I know ) .
I hope he stays.

Probably because it's been difficult to bring him back and displace someone who has been playing well. Plus managers don't tend to tinker with their CB partnerships too much unless they are unbalanced.

I haven't seen any evidence of him downing tools or poor attitude and IMO he has only ever played the way he has been coached to. He was a bit of a scapegoat under Parker because the team as a whole played in a more negative way, looking for the safe pass rather than taking a risk up the lines. It was a frustrating time to be a fan and unfortunately Lloyd bore the brunt from the boo boys.

Nowadays any abuse he gets is from the morons who are actively looking for a scapegoat, especially if Billing isn't playing.

I think he is a player that divides opinion.

He hasn't really fulfilled my expectations of him since he has been here.
Even when he wasn't injured, he never seemed to establish himself as a key player in what we do.

It is unfortunate that he is leaving now because if anybody could help him to make that next step and fully realise the potential that we think he has, then I think Iraola would be that man ! But unfortunately the contract situation being as it is, that horse has already bolted.

We've recently seem glimpses of what he can do when he feels able to get forward. I really think that is where he can become an exceptional player.
Unfortunately he has spent a lot of time at CB or when he has been played on the outside, it's usually in a setup where he is not encouraged to get forward.

He has too many exceptional physical attributes to be stuck at CB IMO and will probably only reach his true potential as a wing back or whatever we are calling them these days.

But of course, his injury record hasn't been great so if that continues to be the case, he may never become the player we all thought that he could be.

Eddie isn't a bad alternative mind. He's the man that brought him to the PL so knows a great deal about him and his attributes.
