I've jsut googled around and found this analysis on Vina, by Roma, after they signed him. They then do what seems like a pretty thorough analysis/comparison in different areas of the game. Vina comes out on top of most defensive ratings compared to Spinazzola.

All things considered, perhaps theres some kind of adaption going on to the English game, when it comes to the defensive side perhaps??

Defensive stats are pretty solid as far as top flight fullbacks/wingbacks go.

I’m not saying he’s the standard of a certain Gareth Bale but reminds me of him at times. He also started at left back so could certainly move forward. A few tweaks to his defensive game could see him be a very important player for us going forward.
 
The stat attack thread has some focus on Vina. Some of the data surprised me but I only listened on the radio.

I wouldn’t be unhappy if we signed him

Think that dribbling stat will be going up next season!
 
So let me get this ŕight.

People on here wanted to throw money at Zemura who couldn't defend for toffee,didn't score any goals this season or get any assists,but we don't want to sign someone who is a better defender,should have 3 goals in 3 starts if not for VAR,and will obviously get assists too.

Charlie Daniels wasn't an amazing defender either btw.

I was thinking on Saturday, if we do sign him permanently we absolutely must not coach out his attacking tendencies. I think he needs to be allowed to make these forays forwards, others just need to cover the space he leaves behind. Because let's be honest, if we sign him purely as a defender, there are probably far better, cheaper options available ! But he's an exciting player with real quality going forwards. If we can afford that luxury then I'd love him to sign permanently.
 
It's not often we get a 'try before you buy' on a player of his ability, we're more used to taking punts on potential.

We can spend pre season working out how to exploit Vina's strengths and mitigate or improve his weaknesses.

Seems to have core talent, flair, ability there. Much more excited by Vina than I was after seeing Rico play first few games. From that article and other stuff I dont think he's poor defensively at all - like mentioned previously, perhaps adapting to differences in English game. Reports and pedigree indicate he is a decent defender.

Looks like he's enjoying his football - not surprising after those goals! Plus part of positive buzz around the camp, after securing safety. All those positive emotions may play part in him joining, should be press on with it!
 
I think he's ideal for the wing-back role within a back three system, with Kelly supporting over at LCB. From what I've seen, Gary actually seems to play this system quite well compared to other managers we've seen try.

I also think Vina will improve defensively as he gets more accustomed to the PL. Sign him up I say!

Switching to that as our primary system could work, but would need some work recruitment wise, as we'd need more specialist wing backs than just Vina and Tavernier.

Never want to see Smith or Kelly shoved into wing back again if we can help it! Jaidon Anthony not ideal either although ok in short bursts.
 
According to the Echo’s version of what Richard Hughes said on Solent, we have an option to buy Vina, in contrast to Jack Stephens where it would depend if our Championship friends up the road wanted to sell: “Unlike Matias (Vina), there is no option (to buy) for us, so Southampton are the masters of what will happen there.”

I would like to see us exercise the option to buy Vina.

It was widely reported, when we signed him, that there was an option for 13 million if I remember correctly.
