Non - Pandemic

That was an interesting exchange of views across a few generations and cultures..pushing against a few boundaries ..and some misconceptions chucked in.
Im still awake.

Brexit day...should be some more fun on the forum. Might as well stay awake now! Read some decent literature....thats what I do ...read and learn stuff!

I certainly deny knowing wtf you are talking about.

Not seen this thread today and it appears some posts have been removed.

If I had to guess I'd say Bill's been on one of his absolutely hilarious "I've-not-got-a-racist-bone-in-my-body" skits. What a cad he is.
Or maybe ' bounder'...who cares.
Its only opinions.
I assume thats the point of a Forum.
We can change from one day to the next if we so wish.
I voted Leave....Ive changed my mind now.

Racist?..Christ I wouldnt have faintest clue of how to get on the bottom rung.
I'll mix with any that want to live a decent moral life !

Racist..People like to pull that out for anything nowdays..
Don't they Bill, you old Janner Skate you!

All of the deaths so far have been amongst the elderly or vulnerable so although that is certainly not reassuring the virus shows a lot less virility than
SARS.

And having recently travelled I can say confidently the wearing of face masks against this useless unless of a high and expensive specificity otherwise it will do absolutely no good.
They only protect you from transferring the virus to yourself from picking it up on your hands and transferring to your nasal passage.
It won’t stop you catching from someone walking close to you .

I had also heard this, the masks you see people wearing on the news are practically useless, the virus can still get in through the sides of the mask and it doesn’t form a proper seal around your nose. Most of it is profiteering by the mask sellers and people panicking

At a time when international airlines like British Airways and American Airlines are cancelling flights to China to mitigate the risks of spreading the deadly coronavirus, national carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) has maintained that it will continue flying to the Asian country.

Kenyans, however, have not taken this move kindly and have accused the airline of prioritising profits over the dangers it was exposing the country to.

It did not help KQ's situation that there's a Kenyan student from China who arrived aboard its flight that is currently quarantined at Kenyatta National Hospital because he had coronavirus-like symptoms.

China has become a very important trade ally of Kenya, and is currently funding and building major infrastructure projects in the country which has seen a surge in the number of Chinese nationals travelling to the country.
Most international airlines are not flying to China because no one wants to go there and it is uneconomic to fly empty planes, nothing to do with them wishing to stop the spread of the virus. For me Africa is the biggest concern, its resources are practically owned by China with a huge Chinese workforce and a lot of movement between the various countries yet it has virtually no modern disease control.

Two cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the UK, Public Health England says.

Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, said: "We can confirm that two patients in England, who are members of the same family, have tested positive for coronavirus.

"The patients are receiving specialist NHS care, and we are using tried and tested infection control procedures to prevent further spread of the virus."

The Department of Health declined to say where in England the patients are from, but it is understood they are being treated at a hospital in Newcastle.

Not sure if anyone has put more details on about the start and cause.I have a great niece who has been teaching in china for 5 years now and is at the moment in wuhan, trapped in her small flat.I spoke to her mother who is on skype to her every day a couple of days ago and she told me the following, the outbreak actually started last June with the first reported cases in the town. They were all told to take precautions but don't worry but as we all know now it is worrying for us all.The whole town has been in shut down now for at least two weeks but luckily she has a small shop very close by and they are selling food and water to only the locals now until supplies run out,not that anyone is out in the streets shopping. As far as the original pick ups a few days ago they were told to get to the pick up point but with a total movement ban in place that was not possible anyway, and it was about 3 hours away. She is not alone in the area and has other brits she can shout to across the road and of course skype. She will not leave as being a true brit has taken in two dogs and a cat that would have either been run over or ended up in the local food market. She is very upbeat and just says what will be and stick it out until there is no other options other than evacuation in a sensible way.The only positive for her at the moment is that the government has said that all workers will be paid until this ends,so something good at least. We wait to see whats next.

I had to wear a “proper” mask in theatres recently when dealing with a flu positive case.
The only mask to protect you from viruses is heavy and looks like a WW2 gas mask complete with clip on battery pack and whirling fans. It was heavy cumbersome and noisy.
We do use a less cumbersome mask for some staff but they have to be “fit” tested by having the mask on (way more expensive and sturdy than the “Chinese traveler masks”) whilst a hood is placed over their head and a spray is deployed (bitter or sweet) under the hood. If any gets past the mask a bitter or sweet taste is detected in the tongue and the mask has failed you.
The common seen disposable masks are utterly unfit for purpose for stopping spread from a local passing person and only stop you transferring virus to your own nares from your hands.
Most common respiratory viruses gain access this way .... someone sneezes .... leaves a fine film over an area .... door handles, surfaces, light switches etc and touch then transfers it to the nose / nares.

it’s a little known fact that kissing someone with a cold is actually not a reliable way to catch viruses so if he or she is attractive .... go for it ..... unless they have Ebola.

I thought the flu virus could infect people through the eyes and ears?

Eyes is possible as it is a mucous membranes .... ears ....no.
Most likely form of contracting illness via the eyes would be rubbing them with infected hands from contact or surfaces.

Of all the places in this country the virus could arrive in, Newcastle isn't a bad shout. Geordie immune systems must be hard as nails. They go out wearing next to nothing in sub zero temperatures every weekend and manage to avoid catching anything!

Cases in the UK doubled today; doctors surgery in Brighton closed, school in Southampton now closed due to suspected cases. It’s not going away is it.
