Non - Pandemic

Independent Sage are recommending that schools do not open unless there is a case rate of less than 100 per 100,000 in all regions... (seems a nice round number to base the science on, I’m sure it’s just a coincidence and that hospital capacity, vaccination rates, infection rates amongst the older age groups have of course been calculated into this...)

They also want case rates to be below 10 per 100,000 for shops, entertainment and hospitality to open.

Is independent SAGE the scientists not clever enough to be on SAGE or do they
know too much to be on SAGE ?
I see their chairman David King is the one who advised the Brown Gov't to promote Diesel cars instead of petrol because of lower CO2 emissions........................

Which was probably right at the time.

But its a standard tactic, picking up on one error to bring into question everything else he's done. Donald would be proud.

Matt Hancock acted unlawfully when his department did not reveal details of contracts it had signed during the Covid pandemic, a court has ruled.
A judge said the health secretary had "breached his legal obligation" by not publishing details within 30 days of contracts being signed.
The public had a right to know where the "vast" amounts spent had gone and how contracts were awarded, he added.
The judge also said publishing the details allowed bodies such as the National Audit Office, as well as Parliament and the public, to "scrutinise and ask questions about this expenditure".
Mr Justice Chamberlain acknowledged that the situation faced by the DHSC during the first few months of the pandemic had been "unprecedented".
He said it was "understandable that attention was focused on procuring what was thought necessary to save lives".
But he added that the DHSC's "historic failure" to publish details of contracts awarded during the pandemic was "an excuse, not a justification".

Why was it right at the time ? Diesel cars are less polluting now than back then and still do much greater MPG. No, he didn't consider the other dangerous pollution effects (nitrous oxide etc) properly and instead told the gov't what they wanted to hear.

They are talking on 5live about a Brazilian variant being found in Ireland.

Should we be worried about this ?
Yup. All variants give cause for concern. Just wish we'd closed all borders more effectively (quickly and comprehensively) and set up hotel quarantine for inbound travellers more quickly. And provided a ring of protection around care homes which patently didn't happen if you believe the BBC Panorama programme about it. I also take on board that we are a global hub, whatever that means... Fortunately reading between the lines on BMJ, Lancet and other sources, it looks like vaccines still offer some protection against the current variants though the Brazilian looks more potent in terms of infection. It's amazing how well the vax programme has been ruled out. Credit where due. But, the whole thing is still frightening and if people aren't frightened then something is wrong. I don't think we can afford to relax restrictions on 22nd, even if schools go back on March 8... Unfortunately, I believe the UK Gov will offer something as a concession (throw us a bone) but it probably also realises that we really cannot afford another big lockdown further down the line, so will keep things tight. My own opinion only.

Good and bad news today.

More than 17 million people in the UK have now received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while the number of deaths has surpassed 120,000.

From Wiki A sage (Ancient Greek: σοφός, sophos), in classical philosophy, is someone who has attained wisdom.
