Post-match thoughts v Southampton

Lewis Cook isn’t capable of fulfilling the role that Lerma does in the team. He doesn’t have the energy levels, the physicality or the ability to pose the occasional threat in the opposition’s box. I don’t really get the comparison, the two are absolutely nothing alike.

Absolute nonsense. I can see why your predictions are always so bad. Not sure you understand the game very much.

Meanwhile Surman, that well known hardman that was sent off multiple times because of his physicality, somehow managed to do the role better than possibly anyone we have ever had.

I thought we played brilliantly in spells last night, the passing and movement down the right hand side was superb. The ability to switch to Vina on the left when needed was a great outlet also, he played well. A high pressure game in what looked like crap conditions was dealt with well by our 11. Rothwell becoming our most prominent player, please persuade Jeff to stay another year! VAR is still ****************, clear and obvious is just a fallacy. The handball wasn’t any different to the one given against us at Newcastle? Probably more obvious. Glad to see Kelly do well against an international player. Neto must command his 6 yard box better if only for my blood pressure, that is my only complaint. Wonderful to hear you all singing throughout the game, gutted I wasn’t there. Forward Boscombe. Not for kids. Contains very rude words indeed.

He's got a Pompey accent though : )

ps imagine the scene, Blackmore and Tessem in the booth commentating on "them ". Blackmore reaches down to get another pie from his rucksack. Roger, quick as a flash, puts a bag over Jo's head, drags him out, shuts and locks the door.

Adam ( looking at his pie ) - " Totally agree, Jo. What do you think the main problem has been this season? "

Roger begins to explain his views on all things "them"

30 seconds later, a Solent continuity announcer. " Well we appear to be having some technical issues with our commentary feed, so here's Christopher Cross and Sailing. We'll let you know if there's a goal the match" : )

wait, so you are comparing Surman to Jeff now?

and you say I don’t understand the game, okay then.

I’ll try to make it simple for you.

-Surman was a deep lying play maker. His job was to receive the ball from the back four and to keep play ticking over, recycling the ball to start attacks. He very rarely won any tackles or headers, he was a possession based player.

-Lerma is a midfield destroyer, his role is to break up play and to use his physicality to disrupt the opposition. Where Surman was a possession based player, Lerma’s best attributes come in the form of the work he dies off of the ball.

-Lewis Cook is far more in the Surman mould than he is the Lerma mould, he likes to get on the ball in deeper positions and try to build play from the back. He does have more bite to his game than Surman but he in no way can be described as a midfield destroyer in the way that Lerma is.

The mistake you have made is to think that every midfielder who plays in a deeper position must automatically offer the same attributes to the team. The fact that you’ve called me clueless is hilarious, because you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about if you believe that Cook’s game is in any way comparable to Lerma’s.

You posting that Surman "very rarely won any tackles" kind of ends any meaningful discussion.

Oh yes, I forgot about what a midfield destroyer Surman was. Flying in to tackles every week wasn’t he. Do you even watch us play?

You know you dont have to be off your feet to tackle someone? Surman was excellent at covering the back line and freed up our wings to bomb forward. And you ask me if I watch us play.

Heres a question for you KK.... By the time we get to the end of the season, without looking it up, who do you think would have made more tackles... Surman in 15/16 or Lerma in 22/23. We can check at the end of you want....

I would make a bet with you but.... you know.....

Good luck getting him to pay up

I found it a really strange game.
Southampton needed to win, so they spent most of the time passing the ball around in their own six yard box, playing will Solanke nick it and score in the first half. They had almost no intensity it was really odd. Solanke and Viña were great out balls for us. Dom really ran them ragged, with both wings having a ton of space.

First few mins of the half aside we gave them nightmares, no issues getting out especially down our left. They really struggled and they were incredibly lucky to get in at nill nill. I thought Viña had played two scored two from left wing back, good finish from the Solanke save, darn offside. (Sign him up he's been quality in the two starts he's had.)

I figured second half Saints would be better second half, as they couldn't be much worse and they were better, but they took of their captain and dead ball specialist off which was odd. Especially considering we're rubbish at set piece defense, also the new really tall striker they signed wasn't even on the bench, also odd.

The whole team was playing well, Solanke had several lung busting runs and looked toast after 65mins or so, unlucky not to score a couple but playing really well. Billing likewise had opportunities which in other matches he's buried and had also put in a good shift.

I liked the way Zabarnyi tracked a runner off the back of Lerma, though he wasn't exactly where the rest of the defense wanted him for playing out from the back once so went long.

Think we'll badly miss Tav if he's out now, he works hard and can finish, Christie works hard and can't finish and Dango is raw, glad we have a few wingers as we certainly have few who seem injury prone.

Delighted with the win, hoping we beat Leeds and that's a successful season, I like the look of most of the January business so pretty happy AT<.

Up the Cherries!

When City played Bayern away I remember Nathan Ake doing some wonderful defending when he just shepherded a Bayern forward away from a clear run on goal- nothing fancy, just kept goal side of him, matched him pace for pace and kept big, I thought as an example of excellent. defending that was hard to beat. Just have to say, I saw Kelly do exactly the same thing last night, real quality that not every defender is competent enough to do. But Kelly is- there’s one or two around me at DC I need to say that to.
I genuinely believe Kelly is our best defender but needs to learn from stephens on how to use the ball constructively

Agreed, saints’ approach was odd. If saints had won, they would have been on 27 points and really in the mix to stay up. As for ward-prowse, went off with a “sore throat”…. Would hope our key players would stay on with an injury worse than that in such a key game.

I agree completely with his covering ability, sometimes you don’t need to tackle if you are in the right place at the right time. I don’t see stats from 15/16 so will stand corrected on the tackling.

in hindsight, we've done the scummers a massive favour by beating them, even more so if that late goal had been given and they'd got a point

they've been drifting along in this league for an eternity just about scraping together enough points to survive, now they're 99% certain for the drop they can relax a bit and prepare for next season
time and again the experts on here tell us its nailed on parachute payments alone guarantee an immediate return

and for those same experts continually trying to belittle GoN with the pe teacher moniker, their manager smacks of a milk monitor giving out the tickets in a portuguese preschool

I point you back to my original question to KK. Who will have made the most tackles... Surman in 15/16 or Lerma 22/23? They will have played almost identical number of games by the end.

I'll give you a clue ...Surman is ahead at the moment. .
