Post-match thoughts v Spurs

I’m aware, but perhaps we shouldn’t have committed to such a deal if we were not 100% certain we would continue under GON if we had survived. It’s all well and good signing talented players, but successful clubs sign talented players that suit their intended style of play and direction. We have made too many signings who aren’t necessarily bad players, but they just don’t suit the direction we intended to go in.
Hmm, this could apply to Billing who's just signed up for four more years. If we play with Semenyo up top with Solanke behind him then where does that leave Billing?

A disjointed performance from an imbalanced
Squad. There were elements of good play today, like others have said after Cooks arrival but we’ve ended up in a situation where we have ten players - Semenyo, Brooks, Outtara, Tavernier, Christie, Traore, Moore, Anthony, Kluivert and Solanke vying for three forward spots and just three players vying for three midfield spots.

On top of that despite the vast amount of money spent on Kluivert and Traore they don’t seem up to the physical rigours of the English game and the rest of them who also cost a fortune rarely looking like scoring. Al has given his verdict on them and has asked for an eleventh player in this slot!

Meanwhile three fit players vie for three midfield positions.

Bill got the cheque book out… shame he gave it to dumb and dumber…

Iraola was always going to want quite a few forwards/wingers. We have a lot of quality in there now, which is a good thing. Some of those wingers, such as Tavernier, Brooks and Christie, have also played in the advanced midfield role. So you’ve got flexibility there. Traore is also a midfielder imo, not a winger.

Strikers:
Solanke, Semenyo, Moore

Wingers:
Anthony, Kluivert, Ouattara, Christie, Brooks, Tavernier, Semenyo

Attacking Midfielders:
Billing, Traore, Rothwell, Brooks, Tavernier, Christie, Scott

Defensive Midfielders:
Adams, Cook, Scott, Billing (Technically), Rothwell (technically)

Do we have a bit of an over abundance on the wings and in attacking midfield? Kind of. I think the plan is going to be to rotate this core group of attack minded players often within games though, so don’t necessarily have a problem with that. If you look at how Rayo played, they had a very consistent defensive pivot, so I imagine it will be a straight shoot between Cook and Adams for the starting berth there. Everywhere else, I imagine there’ll be room for experimentation.

I would also imagine that Iraola has asked for a certain profile of player, not necessarily specific players. He’s presumably the one that’s been asking for a lot of forwards, as it fits with how he’s played elsewhere. The board are merely sourcing the best players possible that they think fit this style and what the manager has asked for. So if you have a problem with the balance of the squad, you should probably be blaming the manager and not the board.

I would argue that the board has done a good job in attracting exciting, young, talented players like Scott, Kerkez and Adams, and that the other summer arrivals have been very sensible and have strengthened us well. Kluivert is an upgrade on Anthony, Radu (at this moment in time) is an upgrade on Travers. Etc. If you don’t rate players like Kluivert or Traore then that’s your prerogative. I disagree with your assessment, I think both have looked good so far. And I don’t think that’s all indicative of an objectively poor transfer window, nor that the board have majorly fucked up. I think all of our new signings have looked good in one way or another, tbh.

I thought the ref made one genuinely bad decision today, which was the foul on Semenyo. The rest were par for the course. That aside, I think you have to give credit to Spurs. For me, they were much the better side. We ran around a lot but there was never any end product, there were so many times we got into the final third and lost the ball or gave it away that it was just really frustrating. The only players who've stood out under the new manager have been Semenyo and Christie but it's early days and it looks like we have the sort of young, fit, players who can come good in time. Much to my surprise even Billing has bought into the system and has definitely upped his workrate, although I'm not sure he fits into it yet.
I have to say Solanke definitely doesn't, not yet anyway. Despite scoring against the Hammers he's often been anonymous and surely was today. Kelly was very disappointing too, not great defensively and his passing was awful. Neto didn't have a great game either and if Travers main failing is that he doesn't command his area I can't see that Neto's any better.
I didn't really enjoy today's game, I thought we were outplayed, lacked creativity and, but for a couple of occasions, never looked like scoring.
This .

I thought we pressed well for the first 10 minutes or so but then seemed to back off. I like the idea of making life awkward for opponents, as opposed to sitting back and allowing the opposition time to dictate proceedings, but good teams (yes, I know this was only Spuds) with good players can pick a pass through this if you go too gung-ho. The rest of the first half was not really much different to a GON performance. If Billing could have done more with that great opportunity with the last kick of the half it could have made a big difference.

The second half started well and we were well on top until Spurs broke and got their second. I was in the main stand and got a good view, where there seemed to be a clear offside in the build up to that goal...unfortunately the linesman was 5 yds behind play and completely missed it. Probably need to see TV replays to confirm, but I thought VAR checked every goal for any possible indescretions? That second goal seemed to deflate the team and fans, and Spurs dictated most things until the final whistle. For Spuds, Bissouma and Maddison were a class above today; however, Maddison is one of those annoying little sh*ts that is constantly in the refs ear giving an opinion...I thought refs were supposed to book the gobshites this season?

For us, I think we could have played until sunset and, despite putting in plenty of effort, would still have not scored a goal. However, Kerkez and Aarons are looking useful, and Philip (Billing) had one of those games where he was interested and put in a decent effort. Semenyo offers something a bit different, but at times needs to be quicker in his decision making and general awareness of the game. I am a fan of Solanke but have to say I forgot he was on the pitch for most of this game. Anthony seems to be regressing and looks like a small teenager who could do with a 6 month loan in the Championship to get his mojo back.

We are desperately missing Tavs, and if Alex Scott and Tyler Adams prove to be as good as many have claimed, then we will have a very different looking team for the return fixture at Tottenham. A frustrating day overall, but I still think once we have players available and IA has got his team settled we will be more than OK.

The f√cking Elation that surrounded my being when I saw that Gary O'Neil got 3 points at Everton...so much so that it pulled a bit painfully on the stitches in my scrotum from the surgery done last Wednesday !

You can over - analyse the players and formation all you like.. but theres the ball and there's the bloody goalposts.. you want it ..you go for it as a team. ...if your good enough you win more than you lose .End of. Fullstop

They’ve finally got a young talented coach but are blunting him with their inept expensive and late purchases.
Yes Neil, it became such a recurring theme on here; you - at the time - identifying the ineptitude, cost and lateness of each signing. Barely a day went by - at the time - without you clearly and openly critisising each signing in those terms.

Except you didn't Neil. You've been exceptionally quiet on your specialist subject while the consensus has been very positive on our signings.

Also, strangely, "their man" Gary O'Neil was given good signings but was unable to manage them because he was a PE teacher and couldn't drive a Ferrari. Now they've (somehow) appointed a coach you approve of and - guess what - all of a sudden the signings have turned into duds.

Pull the other one Neil, it's got bells on.

Personally, I enjoy going to watch football live because I enjoy going to watch football live. I don't take it to much to heart if we don't win, I love it when we win ( even if we've played poorly). Today, we came up against a changing Spurs team, from what I saw, they're in transition with a new manager and no talisman "up top" for them. I'd say they look a lot better as a team than last year and will be closer to Champions League but they're replacing Kane's 30 goals with Richarlison's 3.0 goals : )

We're in a period of transition, it's going to be good, bad, successful and unsuccessful, sometimes all in the same match. It's whether we're seeing incremental improvements, in my opinion, they're there but at times you've got to look for them, sometimes they're obvious, sometimes not. Three matches in, against good teams, it's not the time to judge. Keep the faith, have patience and trust in the almighty Billion Dollar Bill : )

Strange weather today, I was in T-shirt and shorts, the Good Lady needed her rainproof tarpaulin, luckily we didn't get wet when it peed down. The owner of the hoodie left on the Good Lady's wheelchair at Anfield, reclaimed it. Good to see a fair number Spurs fans in the DC Lounge, had a decent chat with one of them, Daniel Levy is not a popular man with died-in-the-wool Spuds : )

In the TNT pre-match build up I'm sure I heard Bill say they're going to build a new stadium. My version of reality is, we had years of living hand to mouth as a club, with no real money to build for the future, just survive. Then Max took us on, in my opinion, as an expensive pastime. We had undreamt of success with him ( and of course the Blessed Eddie) but he didn't change that much about the club. So if he ever lost interest (or finance) in keeping us in the top 2 flights of English football our success balloon was going to pop and deflate very quickly. : )

We've now been bought by Bill Foley, as a business project. He's injected more money into Boscombe in a year than, probably, the previous 100. It's a massive gear change and I'm going to hang on for dear life because it's not clear where the ride's going, how big the changes will be, how steep the climbs or descents will be but it's going to be memorable ( good or bad, who knows? ). If we end up with a decent sized ground, local families able to go and watch the Cherries in a 20,000+ stadium in the top league in the world, I'm on board : )

It's Bill's club now and he'll run it the way that he sees best. Some of us are going to be upset by his changes (it could easily be people like myself and the Good Lady), he will make mistakes, he's never run a business like us before, I hope we all pull in the same direction, it's so much easier : )

So in conclusion. onwards to Swansea and Rossi's Fish and chip shop : )

The fans I feel sorry for are my increasing 'sect' of Ignorees..Christ knows how many now.....at a time when they need guidance and answers...and are instead also dipping out on my searing truths and alternative analysis.
If anyone knows any of them...tell them i'll happily welcome them back with no admonishments or repercussions.
We are All Cherries !

If it remains as it is..no worries I'm still enjoying getting stuff off my head !
Chin up Bri some of us are actually hearing but not neccessarly listening.
