My first game was at home to Villa in Oct 71. Soon afterwards we beat Margate 11-0. Each time I was at the Brighton Beach End standing at the front behind a yellow board showing a huntsman with a pint. So I felt obliged to stand in exactly the same place for all matches as obviously some magic was going on here. For the Notts Co and Brighton games in 72 this meant turning up at 11am to get the exact place.
Unfortunately the ritual stopped working in the spring of 72 as you would know. I gave it anotherseason and then feeling rather dispirited during the 73/74 season tried the New stand and also I regret to say I missed a few games to go fishing where I had more luck. I did make a few comebacks and I recall 1976 when we were 2-0 down against bottom club Southport at one point so I moved to another spot. Then there was a bomb scare so i had had enough by this time. Then away supporters started getting unfriendly.
So during the Benson years I tried the South End at no particular spot. At least it didn't seem to matter where I stood.
