The what I did on my holibobs thread

In response to Snooty's calendar getting clogged up with holiday reminiscences, here's a holiday thread all of its own.

If anybody wants to play I may just tell you where I went this year.

And as it's a holiday thread, no bugger can tell me off. :grinning:

DJ, you can grab the My Travels in the Fleshpots of South East Asia part of the calendar and bung it here.

I like to travel and am fascinated by where other people go, so what are you all waiting for?

In stark contrast to se Asia travels in my previous life, last two trips were with my 7 year old old daughter to disney Paris two years ago (her first time abroad) and last summer 2 weeks in Orlando.

Just the two of us. Loved every minute. I've regularly taken her to theme parks since she was a toddler, so her threshold for coasters is already high. Plus she's 140cm already so we were able to go on all the more extreme rides in Orlando this year... velorcoapter, rip ride rocket etc. Just booked to return there together next summer, so perhaps we'll ramp it up to busch Gardens this time.

Always loved roller coasters since my psrebts forced me to go on corkscrew at alton towers when I was petrified at the thought when I was younger.

I'm not a massive disney, Corp money making/extracting machine fan, but if you can just roll with it/suspend disbelief, they're superb places to visit. Seem to get excited/buzz at prospect more so than other trips... exemcept maybe ibiza... which I may revisit with new g/f next season to address the balance if adult/kids type holiday ;)

Daughter is fascinated by Egypt after studying it the past few months. Bought her load of books which she's plowed through. She wants to visit pyramids, but need to look into it as I'm wary of exposing her to risk for a holiday!!

Looking forward to taking her various places as she gets older!

The UK for me, last year up in Northumberland area, beautiful part of the country, if you like nice empty beaches, this is the place for you.

Bird spotters then a boat trip around and the Farne Islands, we were lucky as we went on a 3 hour trip which included landing on Inner Farne, but a month later bird flu struck and it remains closed.

For people who like castles, there are plenty of them, including this one.

This year we stayed on a sheep farm up in the hills for a week, not far from Lancaster.

Second week we stayed in an Airbnb in North Yorkshire out in the sticks.

The UK takes some beating if you have the good weather.

sounds like you have a hefty carbon footprint?

Most recent one in the international break was a road trip to a lesser travelled part of the USA - the Ozark mountains in Arkansas. Luckily we hit the fall colours as they call them out there. Beautiful and unspoilt, far cry from the tourist fall colour mecca of the NE of the US.
Lots of interesting small towns (and many brewpubs and taprooms !!!!) - Hot Springs, Eureka then a trip back to the coast and walk the white sand beaches along the Gulf of Mexico coast arriving back in New Orleans to fly home.
Just got to plan the next one now..........................................

Nu Orlaans is superb. Weird, in a good/intersting way.

Has a unique flavour/vibe (cajun?). Place I knew little about before I did a month tour if the states just after 9/11... goulishly cashing in on cheap flights around the country. My favourite most memorable part of trip in the end.

Stayed 'Rising Sun' hostel in a very deprived area. At night my 6th sense flaskng this is as one of the more dangerous places I'd visited. Antics on bourbon Street area were highly entertaining/memorable. Met some very intersting/odd older characters in tge hostel, outside of tge usual younger, spring break crowd.

Yeah, has a unique feel to it. Like a lot of places has its dodgy areas but still felt safe walking about at night. The old tram system works well there and is good fun to ride - cheap as well.

I think central areas around French quarter are likely fine unless looking for trouble. My anxiousness was more around where tge hostel was stationed, around 20 mins or so walk from tge French quarter.

Did feel very much like Boyz n the hood late at night, with the groups hanging around, coukd sense an air of menace. Felt like you needed to have your wits about you more so than many other places iivve visited, including 2nd/3rd World countries.

If you want to do the pyramids with kids, I'd recommend Cyprus. There are cheap package trips including a short cruise. You're fully escorted once in Egypt so security is less of an issue. Cyprus is very family friendly including water parks etc. Ayia Napa has got the Ibiza vibe too.

Cheers appreciate the info, I'll take a look.

I've been to Ayia napa and yes it does have nightlife on offer, but it's more akin to San Antonio ibiza which really isn't my thing. I love house/techno etc and the 'proper' decent events in ibiza, not the trashy bar crawl areas ;) or the garage, rnb,'commercial dance music like I experienced in Ayia napa.

6 of us went to Ibiza in 1996 - right laugh.

Exactly that -just some bizzare clubs and experiences. Genuinely laughed a lot. Remember thinking 'Do folk really need drugs here?'

The reality is weird enough ;)

Yes I wouldn't go there for the 'vibe' sober lol.

Find it interesting how the place seems to get a pass from authorities as its quite blatant, obvious what goes on there on pretty big scale.

If you like dance music and can tolerate the ridiculous prices for getting into nights, drink prices once in its an incredible place imo.
