Wilson and King

Neil Dawson - 3/12/2017 09:19

I think we either need a five man midfield with King wide right or a five man midfield with King up front on his own.

Totally agree Neil,I think a five man midfield with one up top may have gleaned us 4 points from the last two games instead of one.

This season the equation is Defoe =1/15( goals/ goals expected) ÷ wages × hype x emotional memories x amount of photos in tabloids.....factors into MUCH ADO ABOUT F/ALL ÷ Unbalanced team spirit as the players are confused about team selection/ strategy.

King’s been great as a no. 10 this season. He played most of last season as a 10 too but because he was scoring no one questioned his position. His position is virtually identical this season. Once he bangs in a few more goals (ie when our midfield create something) the theories of King not being comfortable playing behind a striker will disappear again.

According to Norwegian press: https://www.vg.no/sport/fotball/i/wEmpyM/joshua-king-misfornoeyd-i-bournemouth-jeg-er-ikke-happy

Google translated:

"I'm not happy," said Joshua King to VG.
The Nordmann gained his international breakthrough in the spring of 2017 when he scored goals as a spearhead for Bournemouth. However, after the 16 series goals that season, he delivered only eight full hits this season.

He explains this in part with a position change that he is very unhappy with.
"I do not like to blame anything, but I have to say I was surprised that I returned in pre-season and was switched to a deeper position than I did so well the year before. I have started one fight as a tip this year. I do not know, says King and Sugar

He does not say it right, but strongly suggests that the future of the Premier League club can be uncertain.
"I'm 110 percent unhappy with being relocated. I'm not happy and that's what my coach (Eddie Howe) knows. I do not like it. I think most people know I'm the best, says King.

- Is there something that makes you evaluate your future this summer?

"I have three years left of the contract and is Bournemouth player now, but in football you never know. I just want to play in the position I'm in. Why change something that worked so well, I do not understand and maybe it's been a bit in my mind all season.

Joshua Kings seasons in Bournemouth
2015/16: 24 matches from start (7 as substitutes), 6 goals, 2 assists.
2016/17: 31 (5) Matches, 16 goals, 2 assists.
2017/18: 27 (6) Matcher, 8 goals, 3 assists.

"Many may say I'm selfish as complaining about this when I play all matches, but the numbers speak for themselves: I'm the best when I play the top. If you look at me as a player, I think nobody would say I'm a "10's". I do not understand, says King.

- Are you going to ask for a transfer if you do not play the next season?
King takes a long break, sugar and pulls his shoulders.
- Let's look at that. I have three years left with Bournemouth. That's all I can comment on, says former Manchester United talent.

He says he has taken coach Eddie Howe aside to vent his dissatisfaction.
"I have talked to the boss and told me that I do not like this role, but what is being said between us will be in that room. It's no secret that I do not like it. I'm a point and that's where I'm the best.
After the 2016/17 adventure season, the 26-year-old from Oslo was linked to Tottenham. This spring, The Sun has claimed that Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez wants to pay out £ 20 million to pick up Norway's national team player.

His last play is unlikely to curb speculations, and it may be a turbulent summer in the wake of King and Bournemouth.

He is probably right to be upset but its a difficult choice for EH. Both King and Wilson play the same way Its a question for EH as to who plays it better.

...King has been average this season and I think that he has a valid point.Howe does seem to favour Wilson a lot?

Yes and wrongly imo! I don't think we can afford for wilson to go 12 games without a goal next season

Yeah, even ignoring the stats, Josh never looked that happy on television coverage. The biggest smiles that I saw were in the Burnley game when the winner was scored. I know these guys get paid a lot, and it is easy for us to think "just do your job", but they are finely tuned machines and very competitive - you wouldn't want it any other way. So you can understand that he would be disappointed if (1) he didn't produce as well as the previous season and (2) he felt that he didn't get the best opportunity to do so.

But .......... if he does get more playing time at his preferred position and does not produce ........ he better be ready to take the flak.

Eddie likes to stick with certain players, in this instance, in the hope that they will play themselves into goal-scoring form or continue to put in a work-rate that still justifies their inclusion...

However, I think Eddie gave Wilson too much respect and time to get going last season... Wilson has put in good shifts, work-rate wise, but that won't keep us up next year... You need to score...

King was been bang-average last season, but in fairness to him, I cant think of many, if any, times he was up top, leading the line.

If this is all true, and not just some bulls*t paper talk, then Eddie will know he's got a problem to solve. Neither Wilson, King or Defoe set the World alight last season, and we can't afford to bring in new players to bang in 15 goals... We need to bring out the best in what we have. Wouldn't surprise me to see Defoe go this summer, leaving us with just these 2, and in the past 18 months, our best spells have been with King up top, on his own...

King, supported by Ibe and Stanislas would be my favoured top 3

King has a point to an extent...he isn't and never as been a number 10 despite how many times Eddie tires to shoehorn him in there. We know when played as a centre forward he'll be a bit streaky but over the course of time he will get into double figures. Those sorts of forwards do not grow on trees. Let's not waste him.

If these comments are being reported accurately it should hardly come as a surprise. Eddie's obsession with signing at least one striker every season is always going to create issues. The simple maths of the situation is 5 into 1 doesn't go.

In my opinion, King should embrace the role of a wide forward. Ronaldo and Salah have shown playing this role is no barrier to scoring goals. Obviously King is not in that class, but they should be the inspiration for what he should be trying to emulate.

The good thing is he has pulled Eddie aside and told him what he feels,so it isn't new to him.
As said above the challenge for Eddie now is how to play King and Wilson together, whether that be in a front three or a two.

This imo.....he has the tools to make that position work.

I don't think this is a surprise. It was commented on enough here last season and I think he's right to feel aggrieved at being moved when he had been tearing up the league in his old position.

The Defoe signing creates the issue. You could easily have King and Wilson battle it out to lead the line, as long as you're fair about switching when someone is out of form. However, you can't really have three 'first choice' players for the one role and nobody who is a natural fit for the deeper one.

We have plenty of very talented options up front but there isn't a balance to them which i a shame.

I'm not sure what the solution would be bar one of them moving on.

When play three up top, King, Wilson, and Ibe looks great on paper. When we switch to wingers we do seem to go with a 10 and a 9, in my opinion Wilson is still a better 9 than King, but not by far. More importantly though King is a better winger than Wilson, and Ibe obviously has years spent out wide already. So to not change personnel it makes more sense to leave Wilson up top. Howe has history of trying to turn wingers into 10s, Ritchie, Fraser, Ibe, and now King, he wants players with that versatility

Were it not for Wilson's injury King might never had got a chance up top, but when he got that chance he took it well. I think pre-season there will be a decent competition for that 9 shirt, but even if King doesn't win then I understand why EH still wants him on the pitch, he#s got a lot to offer. Players can get caught offguard when on international duty, not thinking that comments will get back home, but this seems like either a strong lapse or a come and get me
