AFC Bournemouth v Manchester City

if some of our fans are happy
The people moaning about no attempts at goal, are obviously happy with the way we set up & play in the 5-1 drubbings we get against the top sides in this division.

Ok,carry on having a moan if it makes you feel better.

Very rare for me to moan after a defeat tbf and if some of our fans are happy with being humbled like that then good luck to them.

I find it odd that we consider ourselves to need Wilson, Brooks, Lerma etc to be able to compete. How on earth did we survive our first season? We played far more expansive, attacking football with high pressing, and significantly inferior players, but were somehow just as good, while far more entertaining.

And one thing is really clear: as a team we aren't nearly as fit as we used to be.

Losing 1-0 with 5 minutes to go, at home, having had 0 shots, and still keeping 11 players behind the ball is about as depressing as it gets.
I didn't feel depressed at any stage of that game. Now last Wednesday night was depressing.

Thing is I could understand the moaning if we set up to defend week after week, but we don't. We're known to be one of the most attack minded sides in the division. One game of everyone behind the ball (with an injury depleted team) to try and prevent a hammering and everyone starts foaming at the mouth.

When we're playing with a threadbare squad against a team who can replace £50m+ players with more £50m+ players what can you expect? City may have won but they didn't thrash us and for all their possession and shots only managed to 'squeeze' one past us. I don't like the way we had to play but I'm glad we didn't get a 0-5 or worse!

When you consider the number of goals we've conceded recently, I think there were a number of positives from that. True, our lack of attacking intent was disappointing (although as Norton Cherry says, we don't set up like that every week so I'm not too worried) but Mepham and Simpson looked good and would have learnt a lot, Brooks got some minutes on his way back from injury, and we showed that we CAN actually defend, which will hopefully give the whole team confidence.

If you see it as a training exercise for the defensive side of our game, I think we will have got a lot out of it which will help us in more winnable games in the future.

Our problem today was when we did get the ball, we either lost it again or never did much with it.

One of our best opportunities to attack, was the first half move involving King to Brooks and Brooks to Fraser who went down either from a foul or lost his footing, from my view it wasn’t clear to see.

There was a desire to give it a go. Ibe, Mousset and Rico all came on for Simpson, a tired Brooks and Clyne, and we changed formation to two up front.
I'm not necessarily blaming Eddie, I don't know who the culprit is. I recognise we tried to change from a 541 to 532, but the formation is irrelevant when no one is making any meaningful attacking movement. At 1-0 and creating nothing we needed to take a gamble, yet were rigid and overly disciplined.

He looked for it as did King and the ref wasn’t fooled ...

I'm a bit surprised at some of the reaction on here today. We were running late and my lad said "on the bright side, if we are late, we might miss a couple of goals!" To be fair that wasn't a stupid statement. I'd much rather we have almost none of the game but give ourselves a chance in the last few minutes and still be (numerically) in touch rather than, as we normally do, try and out football the mega bucks teams in the top 6 and get stuffed. OK we managed it against Chelsea but that was with brilliant counter attacking and they are a shambles once a goal down but it wasn't going to work against City, especially after that debacle vs Arsenal.

Usual meltdown after defeat. I was happy with the players today - thought Simpson and Mepham did well with all players putting in so much effort. Most people thought it would be a landslide score but it wasn’t. Credit Man City for their control of the game - they were excellent.
