European Super League

Putting the morals and traditions aside, this format of ESL is just a really bad business idea, by being so non-inclusive.

I will be the first to support an ESL if they go about it right. They need to take a leaf from T-20 in India. Create a dozen NEW teams that pick squads from the teams locally, a bit like international teams. A genuine franchise model that all the teams have an equal share of that doesn't the benefit the top teams only, limited games, but the best of the best. Also takes pressure of players to join a top team if they get selected.

Sometimes you need the worse possible idea to generate better alternatives.

We already have something that's a bit like international teams- i.e. International teams. Pitting together the best of the best? Isn't that what the finals of all European and International competitions are essentially?

Also elite players already play enough games between their domestic and international commitments (perhaps a bit different to cricketers who play in the off season) so what's going to give?

Interesting question.

Players are currently registered with the FAs of each respective country. Which body would register the players of this new league if the FAs refused to do so?

in the US, MLS owns the players and the teams, while unlikely to be the model for the super league, I can see the league having ownership of player contracts...

The more and more you hear the less and less that this looks like nothing more than a bluff.

Im naively amazed that the Premier League clubs are happy to walk away from the league and the riches they get. They have a financial advantage over the Spanish and Italian clubs under normal non covid circumstances.

The likes of Arsenal and Spurs in this level playing field will be chewed up and spat out by the likes of Real and Barca.

Agreed, if it’s a complete breakaway from all things we now know, the founder clubs will all have an equal share in the ESL and that will be its own body who player registrations will be with.

International bodies such as the FA won’t recognise them, hence they won’t be included in international football.

I'm sure other people can think of ways this will work, but without an official "B" team replacing these clubs in the premier league I can't see how it will work. You can't have Man U fielding a weakened team one week, and a strong team the next. Might there even be conflicts when the teams play each other in the domestic league?

Maybe a parting of the ways or bluff. If the former expect it will end up like kerry packer and cricket - temporary beak and then come back together.

Biggest clubs want a bigger slice of the cake. Interesting though that sky seem to demand relegation from prem for restart last season as that bumps up interest in crunch games that adds drama. Similarly champ play offs.

There seems to be three options: 1) The six participate in the Super League + continue in the PL, 2) a compromise is reached giving them more power and money, or 3) they break away completely, gambling that this new league has the same draw as the PL.

Option 1 would undermine the PL in the same way as Option 3, as the six prioritise the European games. Option 2 is would result in a proxy version of the same thing, with the gulf in incomes / resources making it a separate league in all but name. So from where I'm standing let's see them attempt Option 3, we'll have our competitive league structure back and they can all f**k off into obscurity.

Doesn't smell like a bluff

I think you're bang on here. I don't see an option that doesn't result in either these clubs leaving completely or a major compromise to the integrity if the PL. If they are allowed to continue with turbocharged resources it will simply consolidate a two-tier PL, which will ultimately turn people off.

I always thought it was a power play bluff to engineer option 2, but the last 24 hours looks like we are now well beyond that.

You don’t get JP Morgan suggesting the figures they are suggested and American and Middle Eastern Tv Companies doing all the talking they’re doing...and then climb back into bed with UEFA.

So it’s option 1 which I guess would be the English clubs preference, or if they lose their gamble it’s option 3.

Gid Orf Our Land ...you Mangydog Foreigners wid all your Money...we have green grass... and wood for the goalposts - we can erect fences, cobble a team together in studded boots in any pub, village, town or city...start again...and shout our bollux off for them !

The PL and 'other 14' clubs are in a tough spot here. They are so massively reliant on the cash that the top six bring that you could see their chairmen voting in their own self-interest and accepting the blood money by allowing them to continue. They would have to see that they'd be signing the PLs death warrant though surely.

Short term, short term self interests will see them take the money. They’ll know it’ll be a slow death.

so we would have 82 teams left to form the new PL/EFL based on club size etc we could change things considerably!
