Non - Pandemic

I note the education recovery statement gets almost zero coverage on the media.

I almost completely missed the farce of the Tories getting in someone to put together a plan, only for them to bin it off and for him to quit because he wasn’t being listened to.

Children have been failed again and again during this, but far more interest in pints, pork pies and holidays.

I listen to TalkRadio a fair bit and trust me, there have been plenty of debates about education all along the way.

I have seen a few such polls where the majority seem to want restrictions delayed and I am bewildered about their thinking. Are they people who just haven't really been affected by lockdowns? Or those who have been scared stupid by the Govt and media??
I imagine it's those who remembered coming out of lockdown too early and the consequences thereafter.

There are a lot of people who are not really affected by the lockdown especially in its somewhat watered down form at the moment. Many didn't use public transport, or ever go out much to visit restaurants, cinema, pubs etc, go to sporting events or concerts. A lot just spend most of their time at home watching the TV, with the weekly visit to Tesco's or wherever, shop online for other stuff, don't have kids in education etc. There are also quite a few who have just been scared witless - I have a couple of friends who were normal outgoing blokes who would regularly visit pubs and restaurants and go shopping. Despite having had 2 jabs they are now virtual nervous wrecks, frightened to go anywhere socially, won't go indoors when they visit friends or relatives - very sad to see and I don't know how they are going to get their confidence back.

Yep, theres also a fair few I know who don;t want lockdown eased as would prefer to continue working remotely.

There are a couple of aspects of lockdown I would like to keep, one in my control, the other, not so much

1) Saving a bunch of money that would normally be spent on stuff I didn't really need
2) Being able to work from home

If it works, why not.

Academics use COVID game to encourage vaccinations

Researchers in Denmark have created a virtual reality(VR) game where people avoid getting the coronavirus in a bid to increase vaccination uptake.

Participants, while wearing VR goggles, play as an elderly person crossing a square in public through a throng of people.

They can see people infected with the virus in red, and vaccinated individuals in blue.

One participant, Adam, said: "It was fun, definitely. It felt like you were there."

"We know from similar studies that after people went through a virtual reality experience like this, their vaccination intention increases. We have observed this with COVID already," said Robert Bohm, professor of psychology at the University of Copenhagen, citing a prior online study by the researchers.

He added that the game could be used at a doctor's office for example.

If people didn't do those things anyway, they have nothing to lose by getting back to normal of course! There are some that think we have all the freedoms we need already but we are miles away from that still. Until we can all go about our lives as we did before 2020, we are still restricted. Entertainment and hospitality will also agree we are nowhere near free yet!

As for the other part - sickening isn't it. One thing with older more vulnerable people being wary of course. I think those examples will be replicated across the country and those who have caused this, either the Govt with their scaremongering and horrible adverts.....or the media who have gone along with this and given such huge amounts of doom every day....they are the ones to blame.

If people really do want a normal life again, one thing we all have to get over, is being near other people without thinking they will kill us!

There you go again.

Staff burnout is an ‘extraordinarily dangerous risk’ to the NHS and social care, former health secretary Jeremy Hunt said.

A report by the Health and Social Care Committee has unearthed enduring issues which threaten the future of the UK’s cherished health service.

Employees are so exhausted that a ‘total overhaul’ of the way staff levels are managed is now considered an ‘emergency’.

An official survey found nearly half of NHS workers experienced job-related stress as Covid-19 took its toll.

Unfortunately can’t read the article. But interesting stuff...

Interesting, figures all depend upon the exact increase in transmission rate by variant. That model seems to assume 50% more transmissable than the Kent variant, recent estimates are saying 40% so that would bring the herd immunity level down a bit. Then you also need to add in the large numbers that have had the disease and have some level of immunity, they will then count as if they have been vaccinated so we can't be far off a required herd immunity level of say 80%. (54% fully vaccinated + those that have had the disease). Over the next couple of weeks the numbers fully vaccinated should reach 65%. Surely we have reached the protect the elderly and vulnerable threshold ?
