Thoughts on the match V Sheff Utd

Thoroughly enjoyable game.
Proper game of football.
10/10 match day experience.

(Also, good to have crowd noise rather than deafening music pre ko and after the game.)

I even managed a halftime hotdog. took 20 mins, downloading an app, in a queue with annoying kids. turned out I coulda gone in a quick queue, swearing...... but it happened

My verdict-
And I’m aware that this is going to trigger a few people…
Positives:
-every player, to a man, is fighting for the cause like their life depends on it. This was severely lacking at times last season but SP has really instilled a togetherness and fight into this group of players. Even Billing pressing like a madman, for this Parker deserves great credit.
-when we do have spells and phases in games we look very threatening, we look capable of carving teams open when we are having these spells. These spells within games also seem to go hand in hand with a noticeable increase in our intensity both on and off the ball. If we can work out how to sustain these periods of intensity for longer periods throughout games then we are laughing….
Negatives:
-we are also having extended periods during games in which we look quite laboured and are essentially just holding onto possession for the sake of having possession. This style of football can only be effective from an attacking perspective if played at a very high intensity: pressing high as a team at every opportunity, switching play as quickly as possible at every opportunity, moving the ball quickly and working in rotating triangles when out wide, turning the ball regularly into the channels with quality to move us into the opposition third. If we are off our game at any point with any of these aspects then we can look, for want of a better word ‘lacklustre,’ and not like creating anything. We don’t really have the players to play our way through the lines and up the pitch so this ‘intensity’ is pivotal to the way we play.
-The way we are setting ourselves up to hold onto leads is suicidal and only luck is seeing us through right now, that will catch up with us. If we had a back four full of Gary Cahill’s in might be feasible, but we don’t. We have a five foot something left back frequently defending against a giant at the back post. We have a centre back in Kelly who despite looking very good for long spells, will then make incredibly bizarre decisions or have severe lapses in concentration/positioning. His defending for the chance that hit the bar was crazy, letting the ball travel across the six yard box is one of the first thing you are taught as a young defender NOT to do. I know he was facing his own goal at the time (positioning debatable as it wasn’t hard to see that situation unfolding) but he could have quite easily dealt with that situation by getting the ball to safety imo. Just an example, but if we’re going to be defending our area for extended spells and not concede then we need defenders who can stay focused and make better decisions than what we have in the squad (Cahill excluded.)
So it’s been a good start, but let’s not pretend there isn’t quite a bit to work on in terms of performances.
Haha your not wrong people will disagree with you. Admittedly teams can always play better in any game, but really your still going overboard when we're 3 points clear at the top, unbeaten.
Your dream teams or west brom and Fulham both lost, Fulham completely capitulated 2nd half today.

a fair summary

A+ for effort today but largely outplayed by the better team and hanging on at the end
we failed to stop sheff playing through our midfield despite our endless running; christie must have covered every blade, but we lacked quality IMO

was screaming for billing to be subbed.........just before he scored :throw:

absolutely delighted with the results and league position but suspect we've overachieved thus far?

In the first half, apart from Billings shot in the first half I didn't think we looked like scoring. A hangover from the Peterborough match?

Second half they scored a great goal and that seemed to get us going. For us, no idea if it was a penalty (in or outside the area). Surprised Dom was allowed to take the penalty bearing in mind he'd been treated for an injury.

Yet again, another assist for Christie for our second. Really clever player, very impressed with him. I thought everyone battled very well today. A lot of physicality from both sides. They hit the woodwork late on. But I thought we had it under control in the end.

Enjoyable game, great result.

My thoughts firstly are how bad are sheff utd? Can't believe they were PL last season but can certainly see why they did so awfully up there. Shocking lumpball footballing team. Conditions were shocking but we rolled the sleeves up and dragged ourselves over the winning line. Pearson and Lerma were magnificent. Christie never gave up on anything. Smith battled for everything. Zemura and Anthony grew immensely today and worked tirelessly. Cahill magnificent. Kelly at fault for their goal but otherwise a solid game. Solanke had gloves on, the 2nd of October and he had gloves on. Wtf?

"INJURIES
  • stops play if a player is seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play. An injured player may not be treated on the field of play and may only re-enter after play has restarted; if the ball is in play, re-entry must be from the touchline but if the ball is out of play, it may be from any boundary line. Exceptions to the requirement to leave the field of play are only when:
....

- a penalty kick has been awarded and the injured player will be the kicker"

So it was another good decision from the ref to let him stay on the pitch and take it.

really? not from my seat in the NS in those last 15 mins
we failed to stop crosses coming in and only just managed to hang on

From NS never felt they would equalise today. If it had been an Eddie side they would have equalised. Two centre backs were excellent today

Fantastic bit of factual reference. Certainly puzzled me at the time!

It would be good if referees promoted respect by having a feature in programmes/online along the lines of “you are the ref” with examples like this as I am sure most fans don’t know the rules well enough.

bit biased this summation imo. They were the better team for the majority and played the better football, they were far from a long ball team. Only went direct late on. Kelly was at fault for the goal, he was also very nearly at fault for two others, lapse in the first half to let Sharp in and allowing the ball to travel across the six yard box without dealing with it.

The reality is they had 10 shots one on target, we had 11, 7 on target. Sort of doesn't back up that they were the better team
