Thoughts on the match V Sheff Utd

Dont care if it's biased . I came out of that absolutely buzzing ! Not the greatest in quality, awful weather, some odd refereeing decisions, 6 minutes of added time ( how did he work that out ??) but came back from a goal down, shut their supporters up, stuck two fingers up to the sheff utd supporting ref, wonderful atmosphere, players pumping fists in the air at the end. It was f@xking fantastic to watch so I make no apologies for being biased! Top of the league and shoved it up the northern monkeys
Absolutely. This team has a fight and character to it which is fantastic to see ( at last ) and that will probably be the thing which gets us automatic promotion rather than the playoffs. Sometimes a team just has “something” about them and you just think “they have to be favourites for the league”. I’m already feeling that about our team and reading between the lines of what opposition managers are starting to say about us, I think they feel it too.

Early doors of course but we have something special about us under SP imo. We are very good at getting the results, very consistent. Norwich weren’t the best team in the division last season but they had enough character to be consistent and always have a decent shout at victory.
In this league that sort of consistency counts for a lot and I think our team has that now. I really can’t see us losing too many games and when we do it’ll most likely be by the odd goal. That puts us right in the running for automatic promotion imo.

Loving our team again !

Nothing to be negative about today IMO.came from behind and saw it out.top of the table and now a chance for some like solanke to rest and for Stan and cook to be knocking on the door after the break.

Here’s a thought - how about starting Lowe alongside Solanke? Could provide Dom with more chances - and Lowe looks a likely finisher. Might also give better possession in the opponents’ half. Who to drop? Try one of Lerma and Pearson for 45 minutes. Worth a try …

Think it will happen against certain opposition and when we need to change the shape of the team in certain games. Also think if Anthony needs a rest at any point that Lowe could do a job on the left. Brooks is under even more pressure now because I am wondering if Lowe may get the shout ahead of him if Christie misses any games.

Travers-6- not a great deal to do, they scored from their only shot on target. Doesn’t look comfortable commanding his area though, needs to do better in certain situations.
Zemura-6- didn’t contribute a lot offensively in the first half but came alive in the second. Could of had a goal and an assist on another day. Not the best defending for the goal.
Smith-7 - didn’t offer a great deal going forward but thought he was pretty solid defensively today. Worked hard to close down the spaces out wide.
Kelly-6- very good for long spells but defended poorly at vital moments, got away with it today. Lapse of concentration in the first half allowed Sharp to get in. Out of position for the goal. What on earth was he doing letting the ball run across the six yard box for the Mousette chance? He got very lucky today.
Cahill- 8- didn’t put a foot wrong. At this level you won’t find a better centre back, perfect reading of the game and headed everything.
Pearson- 7- worked tirelessly. Some vital defensive contributions. Quality on the ball lacking at times.
Lerma- 7- see Pearson really. Can’t ever fault his work rate, not sure he is suited to an advanced role from an offensive perspective. He’s a battler, a very good one, but that’s it.
Billing- 6.5- didn’t think he got into the game an awful lot, but again made a vital contribution. Would like to see him getting on the ball more in advanced areas, needs to impose himself on games more.
Anthony- 6- worked hard as always, a few nice touches. Nice cut back in first half unlucky not to result in a goal.
Christie- 8 MOTM- oozes class. Only player producing any kind of quality in the first half. Another very clever assist, timing and execution perfect. Always looks a threat on the ball. Never stopped running either. Our most talented player imo.
Solanke- 7.5- we leave him very isolated for long spells but he never ever lets his head drop. Should have scored early in the first half, great run to win the penalty and dispatched it nicely. Held the ball up well.
Lowe- 7- like the look of him, very quick and likes running with the ball. Won a few fifty fifty’s and posed them a threat in behind. Would like to see more of him.
Mepham- 8- not his biggest fan but pretty faultless when he came on, won headers and made interceptions. Played an important part in holding out.
Stacey- 6- ran about a bit.
Parker- 6- again we had a good spell in the game but looked pretty lacklustre for large periods, his tactics when defending a lead are very very risky and will come back to bite us.
The Ref- 3- since when does a defensive walk have to stand 15 yards from the ball at a free kick? Made a point not to let Zemura steal a single yard on a throw in, then penalised him. From the resultant throw the Sheff U player stole about six yards and he did nothing. Got the penalty right tbf.

Lol what a joke, 8 for mepham who came on for 5 minutes

It was also a clear red card. We were South Stand and Dom was clean through on goal.

As much as I don’t agree with the sentiment, under double jeopardy, the ref won’t issue a red if her believes it was a genuine challenge AND the penalty is given. If it was outside the box and he felt it was DOGSO then he will send the player off. In this case, it seems the ref didn’t feel the challenge warranted a card at all, so a “genuine, not awful” foul. We can disagree with that but I think that’s how it works.

We had this same conversation with a ref in a recent non league game when a keeper wiped out a forward. He ruled the challenge was genuine (only he and the GK thought it was) gave him a yellow, let him stay on and save the penalty to win the match!

Agree.. but not for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity, but for serious foul play.. both feet off the ground, lunging in from distance risking injury to the opponent.

Posted this elsewhere but there was nothing lucky about the penalty. The contact was started outside the area but continued into the area and so was correctly given as a penalty. Actually, an excellent decision from the ref. Gave himself a moment to think before awarding it.
Not sure he got much right today

don't agree with all the scores but all about opinions and our views on the players

Thought Sheff U were poor. We saw more from Blackpool and much much more from QPR

All their fans are saying they played really well and were much the better side! While I think a draw might have been fair, for a team relegated from the Prem and tipped to do well I thought they were very poor. Conditions certainly didn’t help but thought we played the better football.
