Steve Cook

It is truly laughable that we have factions on here arguing the toss about what Cook's salary is and that it is far too high for us to be paying him. For one does anyone in the public realm actually know for certain what his current salary is? Is it in the public domain? I genuinely don't know, most personally negotiated contracts are between the employer, employee and HMRC. Even if it is a publicly known fact what his salary is, it's not any of our business, we're not (directly) the ones paying it. It's for the club's owner and maybe financial director/board to decide whether or not he is worth it. FWIW if it were my financial decision I'd want to keep him here til the end of his career whatever the cost because he is surely worth it. There has been no player more committed to our cause in my memory, he still has a lot to offer as a player as was seen at Fulham and he is a great ambassador for the club. What's more Cahill is only here for this season and if rumours are to be believed, we sell Kelly, come next season we are going to be well in the mire with only Mepham and Zeno as CBs. All the time while Cook might be strengthening a rival's squad! It is absolutely ludicrous to let him go, renegotiate a contract in line with what any rival might realistically offer him by all means but keep him we must.

It's all over the place this post.

The first half is saying how ridiculous it is for people to form opinions on who should be in the squad based on rumours and speculation. The second half is your opinion on who should be in the squad based on rumours and speculation.

I have ZERO idea about the numbers involved. I only care, because I hope the people in charge are making the right financial decisions so we don't end up in the do-do again, break any FFP rules, and aim to run responsibly.

The difference is Steve Cook wants to secure a deal for his family and isn’t on one come the summer and we didn’t want to pay someone 3m to sit on the bench. The other players various reasons……. some are here longer, some were more likely to play when we signed them, some have sell on value so less risk of being lumbered with them etc etc.

Im not shy at criticising the club as you well know but don’t think they have done anything wrong here!

I guess a contract is an obligation. As long as both sides are willing to fulfil that time span with integrity, that's the main thing. Then if both sides are willing to allow a transfer early, all is good. As to whether the club has done anything wrong, it all depends on how things have been handled behind the scenes. Has Cookie been working hard and keen to play? Absolutely. His integrity box is ticked. Have the club treated Cookie right in the process and not tried to freeze him out to force a move so they can cash in before his contract ends? From what I've read, the jury is out on that one. I guess only Cookie can answer that and it's something he might never comment on. Point is.. Have the club done anything wrong? Well, it all depends on the context.

No it fucking isn't.
Read it again if you can be arsed, I'm sure you'll find something to argue about, you always do.
I did not say "how ridiculous it is for people to form opinions on who should be in the squad based on rumours and speculation" I said I found it laughable about certain people arguing the toss around a salary that may or may not be a publicly known fact. If you must jump on my post then at least answer whether or not Cook's salary is in the public domain and a known fact. I admitted myself I didn't know and it's not the main issue. The main point, which you have failed to take on board is that IN MY OPINION whatever Steve Cook's salary is he is surely worthy of it, no?

What we know is that Cook has been out of favour and is likely to leave. Multiple sources suggest it's because his salary is too high. We also know that everyone who was on higher PL salaries bar Lerma has either been sold or has renegotiated their contract. The numbers don't really matter, it's clear that his salary is an issue.

You think a backup player is worth any salary? No I don't agree. You can't be paying people too much if you want a sustainable football club.

How do you explain us signing Cahill?

I'd be amazed if that's true.

It's all speculation isn't it but I doubt any of it is rocket science. Cahill reputed to be on £20k odd Cook £40k odd. Cahill probably with a decent promotion bonus.

What we do know is that the club has been ruthless since relegation in getting rid of people or renegotiating contracts. What other explanation is there?

There is no way Cahill is only on 20 odd!......he was on PL money last season and turned down another contract ....with Palace citing unreasonable wage demands...... For him to take a massive pay cut to come to us just doesn't make sense.......Cookie is leaving us in order for us to finance the Cahill deal.... I'd imagine that the club were a bit miffed that he's stayed on beyond the summer tbh.

He was offered two years here wasn't he? I'm sure you're right about the club (and Cook no doubt) being miffed about the deal falling through last summer.
