‘To do that you keep your best players while they are in contract’

Is that actually true though Billy?

Look at our last stint in the PL.

15/16 16th
16/17 9th
17/18 12th
18/19 14th
19/20 18th

From 16/17 we retained all of our best players year on year and what happened? We steadily regressed every season until we eventually got relegated.

I get where you are coming from but the reality is that in order to have a chance of progressing in the modern PL era you actually HAVE to sell your best player(s) at some point. The key is recruiting well to leave the squad in an overall stronger position.

FFP means that we are going to hit a point whereby if we don’t sell then we are not going to be able to recruit, this will lead to stagnation. You are then left in a position whereby you eventually get relegated and have to sell your best players anyway, only now it will be for bellow their market value.

I feel like you’ve got unrealistic expectations. The key isn’t to retain all of your best players, it’s to sell them at the right time for optimum value and to reinvest the money smartly. Dom will go in the Summer, that is pretty clear to me (even Kris Temple has said this.) I’m not worried about that at all, as long as we reinvest the money smartly.

As history has shown us, retaining all of our top players will only lead to gradual decline. This is a hard concept for some to get their heads around, but the evidence is there.
One of the best examples of benefitting from selling your best player was Colin Clarke to S'ton in summer 1986 for £440k. In came Mark Whitlock, Gerry Peyton, Trevor Aylott, David Puckett, Carl Richards.
85/86 - 15th, 86/87 Champions.

I agree that R&R is not exactly the hottest dude on the Optimism front but there is more than a 50/50 chance that much of his output will prove to be warranted in the long term.
Others provide the optimism....others provide the humour......sometimes R&R does the latter if you interpret comprehensively !

All is Grist to the Mill.

Interesting to hear Nark McAdams thoughts on Hughes and Blake yesterday.
Another respected journalist without an agenda who has a great deal of praise for them.
I think Neil has dug himself so deep it would be impossible for him to save face now.
Might as well become a politician, they are never wrong.
One thing I don’t get is how the chap who runs the Youtube channel which mark was on manages to get these high profile names to appear. He gets a very low view count. I only watched it as I saw a link on X.

I can an assure you R&R is not trying to be funny.

is that the utciad one?

Probably explains the low viewing figures you were talking about..
Very true. But he does seem to get some decent guests. I’ve watched around one hour in total over a year or so.
From what he's said previously it would seem he gets a lot of stick and seems quite upset.
Don’t know why he bothers. Likes the spotlight maybe.

I think it’s really difficult when you’ve been such a high profile fan of another club, particularly a local rival, to establish yourself at a new club because it looks like TV opportunism I guess. I don’t think any of us with our internet history could become a Southampton YouTube presenter and be taken seriously.

When you talk to him in person he’s a really sound bloke.
