After Burnley thread.

I think in situations like these we need people who can tee it up from outside the box. Lerma has looked like he can do this, but unluckily put it just over the bar. I can't remember though how many times one of our players had the ball in acres of space centrally, just outside their box, but didn't shoot.
If they know we never shoot, they can bank on our passes getting lost under the bus.[/QUOTET
Yes it would help draw them out a bit if they were charging potential shots down . Or we need a ‘big man’ aerial presence in those situations but easy to say in hinsight .
We have great players when we are advancing with pace and passing into space but when that space is squished out we can stutter to a stand still . Can understand Defoe coming on , he is (was?) quite happy receiving the ball whilst stationary and making something happen with a turn

Never went today but how do you lose 4-0 with 63% possession!
Happens nearly every game when a side has a lead at half time and sits back.

Believe it was 50/50 possession at HT. Had we had a 2-0 lead, Burnley would eventually have had 60% or more possession

It’s hard to comment without sounding like being wise after the event but when you saw the side did you not fear the worst?

The midfield four included two players in Brooks and Surman that are easily knocked off the ball and not the men for trenches away at Burnley. Having non heading players like Smith, Rico, Fraser, Surman and Brooks in the side makes us vulnerable as well to an aerial assault. There are only three players that attack the ball in the air on the pitch. Lewis Cook wouldn’t have helped this situation in the air but adds fight in midfield. It would have been tough with Gosling but losing him tipped it even more.

We are never at our best against physical Northern teams on their own patch... doing it with that side and players still finding their feet in England against archetypal Englishness it had a hard lesson written all over it. This years Huddersfield result. Will Eddie change his approach to these games though....unlikely on evidence. Still, keeping perspective we just need to beat them at home to even it up and there are enough teams with a lot more to worry about.

We need to sort this by Watford though else it will be the same result.

While you have a point, the side that EH put out last season and won 2-1 was also one that should have struggled against Burnleys style of play.
Begovic, Ake, Cook, Mings, Daniels, Hyndman, Surman, Fraser, Ibe, King, Mousset. subs Gosling, Wilson and Defoe for Mings, Hyndman and Mousset
And yet we controlled large parts of that game.
Today was one of those days where the first goal was crucial - we could have easily gone in front - if we had it's a different game.

4 nil is difficult to take when playing the top 6,but 4 nil against the bottom club looking for their first win, totally unacceptable! Surman no substitute for Gosling type energy and forward vision.

Poor comment.

You are saying that as if Burnley are a real contender for relegation. They qualified for Europe this season due to a great season last time. They have started slowly of course but were never likely to be down the bottom for too long. Think they'll start to grow and get up the table before too long.

Yes hindsight is 20/20 but it was the perfect game for them and the opposite for us. They did what they do and we struggled. It wasn’t as one sided as the score suggested it’s just disappointing that we couldnt get that bit of luck that another day the first two goals would not have been scored. The first was especially disappointing to concede. If we had managed to go into half time only one down it would also have made a difference.

This result hopefully won’t rwally have too many ramifications but let’s not forget that it’s now six goals conceded without a reply. Need to nip it in the bud.

All the talk of Cook not getting back in the side due to being poor v MK Dons, at what point does Surman not get back into the side after being poor?

Not intended specifically as a dig at Surman or Eddie, but just generally thinking aloud: Does the same apply for both / all players? Or do different players enjoy differing levels of patience / trust from Eddie?

Cook wasn't picked for the games before that, why

I get what you are saying as I had similar thoughts at that XI back in May.

In reality though, Burnley were on their holidays, it was a beautiful warm early summer day on a nice pitch. All the ingredients that young technical footballers like to perform well.

Today was more of a battle, in terms of conditions and opposition. Whether Cook would have made a massive difference, we’ll never know. However, other players needed to show more fight too...mentioning no names Joshua King

We could have done with Ming’s height at the back for sure with the amount of aerial balls being played in.

With all our starting defence under 6 foot we could have done with 6 foot 4 Mings in the middle.

We know how Burnley play.

Mings should be part of any back 3 formation in my opinion
