Dominic Solanke

You've misunderstood what I said and agreed with my point.

Neither of those were, in PL terms, considered the finished article when they were bought. They were purchased at a lower price in the hope they could prove themselves. Exactly like we would be doing.
My point was that it’s not unrealistic that we can sign a striker that will outscore Solanke.

I love Semenyo, but I’m not convinced he could lead the line ahead of Solanke.
Why? He’s quicker and stronger and a better striker of the ball. Neither are natural scorers but if I was an opposition defender I know who I’d rather be facing, and it isn’t Semenyo.

Maybe not but he would be a nightmare to mark as is a right pain.
Get the right combination around him and you never know
He didn't exactly set the goal scoring alight in the championship. This is a pointless argument we won't sell dom, it would be relegation suicide.
After 1 half decent performance everyone's getting too carried away. Let's be honest who would trust king Waz opinion, tell me one prediction he's got right

Couple of weeks ago, Semenyo was a "dubious" signing, poor first touch, not sure what he's doing, might have the x factor but haven't seen it, panic buy by clueless, unstrategiesed recruitment team, probably Championship at best. Now, he's better than a player we've ( apparently ) turned down a £40 million bid for. I mean, what does that say about West Ham's recruitment team, they'll never build a squad able to win anything : )

I'll be happy when they both score 10 goals this season, that's more than our 2 top scorers last season : )

If this is realism, give me blind faith any day : )

No offense, but Sounds like yku haven't played football for a while.

It's way more nuanced than that. Which I assume you know.

Semenyo is raw, he may come good, but he's a long way from leading the line ahead of Dom. He was barely regular in the Bristol City lineup a year ago, he's nowhere near replacing Dom regardless of how quick and powerful he is.

Not sure how you're arriving at tge conclusion thst he strikes a ball better than dom. Based on what... a couple of shots recently?

How many did Phillip get last season? I forget...

Yesterday Phillip and Semenyo were the only goal threat we had on the pitch. Players willing to strike at goal from distance and whilst both players had fierce shots that were either saved or just wide your mate solanke was invisible. If you think he's got the ability to shoot this club to the next level at this level then you'll be disappointed.
Still with 1 goal in 300 minutes played so far he is statistically better than last season. Next goal in around 2 games time then
You are totally unbelievable. Billing has been utter pants this season. Pretty invisible for much of the 3 games played, yet your blindness prevents you from seeing this. Solanke scored a great goal v WHU to get us our only point this season so far. Yet you can't bring yourself to acknowledge this. Your stubbornness is making you look like a fool.

No it's not. I believe you are donkey blind and can't see what else goes on . Billing very nearly pulled us level just before half time with an effort just wide and was well involved in the match. I don't believe Solanke had a single attempt at goal. Billing had a good game on Saturday , arguably playing out of his best position. Solanke was non existent. He's your biggest fave player of all time ever, I get that, and I'm sure that when you look at your Solanke wall poster before you go night nights you wish him to score goals . Honestly it's touching, futile but touching .But cling on to your high hopes, clutch them to your chest , squeeze them like a tube of Primula, squeeze your eyes closed and pray. Pray! Dom can do it ! Dom. Can. Do. It. He scored against West ham! He did nothing , nothing against West ham but when needed danced like Anton , sidestepped like a benefits dodger, moved like Jagger and rolled the white pearl into onion sack. Semenyo did fcuk all of course. Antoine who? Oh, and the assist at Anfield. How can you forget the assist at Anfield. The precision of the pass to Antoine who? A pass rolled with a deftness that would embarrass even the finest Cuban cigar maker. A pass with more control than the employer of the month at Heathrows air traffic tower. A thing of beauty. Perfection. Ah, the DOMinator. Graceful like a swan. An archer with the accuracy of Robin Hood. A archer who doesn't need too many arrows in his quiver but an archer none the less. The lead character in a Virginia Andrews novel. Your hero.

:D entertaining read!

To play devils advocate, you could argue thats what many top strikers are all about sometimes.

Anonymous, then popup to tuck it home when needed. Perhaps this is a good sign. Less 'workhorse' like, but if he scores around 15 a season and the teams done well, it can be deemed a successful year for everyone?

To continue on those lines. was Billing' miss a positive reflection on Phillip? He didn;t hit the target after all. I know many will say Dom would have missed, but we'll never know. But Billing did miss...

Credit for being in that position I guess, but ultimately I lean towards him basically missing our best chance of the game, rather than praising him for being in position to take the shot.

Well, I guess you could also say the same about Semenyo's effort. Instinctive, first time hit from the edge of the box that whistled just wide of the top corner. Should he have scored? Christie forcing a good save from their keeper. Should he have scored? They all missed but they had a go. Dom didn't get a sniff. For Swansea I'd love to see Semenyo play that 9 role just to see what he can do. I feel he's wasted playing wide, like Phillip is playing deeper. Phillip produced playing the 10 role and I'd like to see him moved back there. Dom has so become to comfortable knowing that he's always picked . A spell as a sub might give him a kick up the **************** in the scoring stakes , especially if Semenyo , played in the 9 role started to score a few

Perhaps Semenyo will play up top v Swansea and stake a claim if he makes a good impression?

I wouldn't class Christie chance as similar to Billing. Chrisite was further out and just felt hopeful. Billing was a solid half chance imo. Can't recall Semenyo effort..,. actually I can. That was a good effort, similar to Christie, it wasn't a half chance, it would have been a great goal if it went in. Keeper was totally rooted.

Obviously I don;t know Dom personally, not sure he strikes me as someone who'd take his foot off the peddle as apparently he's a consummate professional. However, could be a psychological element, where having genuine competition helps him find yet another gear and raise his game. Similar to what we saw with others such as Daniels, who each step of the way many were proclaiming he was likely going to be out of his depth and the new lb would take his place, but incredibly he kept stepping up and up, holding down that lb spot over time.

If that ball falls to Solanke on the edge of the box like it did Semenyo would he produce a very clean first time strike (with his weak foot) that very nearly finds the back of the net? Of course he wouldn’t, he’d take multiple touches and then look to lay the ball off to somebody else. He just doesn’t have that lethal instinct, he gets nowhere near enough shots away as he should for a number nine.

I’m not saying he’s a bad player, he certainly has strengths. But he just won’t ever be capable enough to carry the burden of scoring the goals that an out and out centre forward needs to at this level. I’m amazed it’s still even being debated in all honesty, it’s as clear as day. Play him in a deeper role where he can be tasked to create for others and it’s a different matter, but we can’t keep playing him as a nine because he just wont ever score enough.

Semenyo is very raw but he at least clearly has an instinct to get shots away when the ball falls his way. Coupled with his pace and power and I really can’t see how he isn’t our best option there right now. We really need to recruit another forward though. Our relegation rivals all are or are likely to, if they all recruit more goals and we are relying on a player who will get around 5 goals all season, then where does that leave us?

Hey...he doesn't know if semenyo is quicker or stronger unless he has played against him or had inside info (gaming doesn't count)
I have no idea if you are being ironic, but are you seriously trying to suggest having seen them both play, that Semenyo isn’t superior in terms of pace and strength?

I would say Semenyo is stronger, I wouldn't like to call who's the quickest though.
Last season, I think Stacey was recorded as the quickest.

Football manager has dom as 14 14 for acceleration and pace. Semenyo 16 16. Regardless I've always thought senenyo is quicker than dom... just from whst I've witnessed so far.

Apart from speed and strength Dom is rated higher across the board, marginally in some attributes, clear on others. Funny enough doms best attribute is 17...work rate. Which is unusually high fir a striker.... but we knew that was his main strength anyway. Work rate that high is usually only the domain of full/wing backs or defensive mids, sometimes central box to box midfielders.

Semenyo has potential to become decent at pl level too ;)

Agree with some of that guv. Not sure he can be effective as amc/ in the hole at this level tbh. I don't think his footwork is intricate enough, doesn't have the vision, passing/technical ability to operate at a suitable level compared to other options. Would feel like selling ourselves short, just shoe horning him into the side when better tools are available tbh.

Possibly wide left as inside forward, cutting inside from out wide on edge of area to offer additional goal threat when chasing a game against teams setup a particular way. But again, only in certain scenerios as although not bad technical wise, not quite there to be effective over the course of the season or good enough at beating players regularly enough imo - better specialist players to do that role in general.

As for 5 goals, thats a bit dramatic. He scored 6 in a disjointed, more defensively orientated side. If we;d had the usual quota of pens, and he continued to tuck them away, thats double figures...

I'm not writing him off yet. Lets give him a chance in a more offensively orientated team first.

That said 40 mill is a lot of money, but I'd be hesitant to sell now, give him til Jan (assuming offer still there then). If we sell him this window, and sign others, I'll fully back AI, assuming he deems Dom not the type of player he wants to lead the line. But I also fully back Dom to get minimum 10 goals this season, even 15 or so wouldnt come as a surprise.
