European Super League

Can someone explain why, whenever league structure is talked about.....that a top division has to be only 20 or less clubs...but all others have to be this unrelenting figure of 24....why not All leagues having 20..or All having 24...or 22. The bigger clubs have bigger/ stronger squads and youth schemes do they not ?...so should be able to cope with amount of fixtures
It's probably the extra gate receipts needed by lower league clubs who generally have fewer other sources of income but carry on playing during international breaks.

The top league can afford the fewer games. Championship clubs arguably could reduce numbers if they cut their wage bill. So in their case because the players want their salaries they have to accept greater risk of injury and more competition from deeper squads.

Above article now updated. Premier League vehemently against the move, but they’ve gone ahead regardless.

Elite club football will never be the same again by the looks of things.

Gary Neville making snide remarks about it.

“Are Arsenal in that super league they’ve just drawn with Fulham. Manchester United are drawing with Burnley”

Shame he’s not in charge of English football.

FIFA saying
The clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams.

if they changed ‘could’ to ‘will’ - that might make a difference.

I wish the leagues and FIFA wouldn’t pander and just said fock off if you don’t want to be part of it and put a cap in it like 10 games in the season in sanctioned matches to be able to play for your country. Let’s see what players they’ll be able to attract when they can’t play for their countries. It takes away all of their bargaining power with PL and UCL for more money and basically stops it dead.

Neville certainly not mixing his words during the commentary, scathing remarks against all those involved including his sole club as a player.
For differing reasons, including principles of fans ownership, French and German Clubs are likely to lead opposition, the new competition wouldnt have much credibility without PSG and Bayern right now

Six places available in the top flight? Whats not to like? And a much more open, Championship-esque, league. This was always the inevitable conclusion to the same greed that created the Premier League.

Seriously, let them have their glorious Super League. 20 away games in Europe will be the preserve of wealthy supporters only.

I hope it leads to a realignment at domestic level.

Sport is about competition. The whole point in sport is having the opportunity to be the best, no matter how unlikely. Creating a closed shop at the top of the game kills the very essence of what the game should be about. Not to mention the financial mess it will create down the pyramid when all the tv revenues are pumped into the so called ‘super league.’ The only people this benefits are the owners of the top six. (Whatever that even means, as last time I checked West Ham and Leicester are in the top six currently.)
