Jack Wilshere

I think the only stumbling block is that it makes no sense for us to pay him a wage if we are unlikely to play him ( which is probable ) and at the same time it makes little sense for him to commit to us if we are not going to give him the game time he needs to prove his fitness to potential suitors.

So although on the face of it, it might appear to make sense to offer him some sort of contract, actually it doesn't really make sense for either party.

I think there may be a desire on both sides to come to an arrangement but the reality is that it probably doesn't really make sense for either party.

Fair point but depends on wilshere’s end-game:

1. Get a decent contract now in January would be great but seems unlikely given current situation for him and financially for clubs.

2. Get fitter and over the injury/fitness concerns which will take some time as he hasn’t had a club since October with the prospect of some match time before this season ends in a team that plays decent attacking football in time for a decent pre-season and new club in the summer

Tindall -

Jack's a player I've stayed in touch with ever since his time at Bournemouth. He was a great lad, a joy to work with and he did extremely well for us," he said.
"Jack got in touch with me, we spoke on the phone and he asked if he could come in and train with the team. I had no problem and no issues with that, I know what a good lad he is and the quality's he's got.
"He's trained with us for two days and it's a matter of seeing how things go. The only discussion we've had is about training with the team, we've had no more discussions about what might happen beyond this point.
"From my point of view as manager while he's here I'm looking at him to see how he's doing and if he fits in well in well with the group and there's a conversation to be had later on down the line then maybe we will do.
"It's certainly not at the forefront of anyone's thinking at the minute."

In a squad where there are, ideally, 2 players competing for each position, I guess he’d be sharing time with Lewis Cook as the sitting midfielder. That seems to me where he would need to play within our system as, no disrespect to him, he’s not historically shown that he has the “engine” to play the more up, down and sideways role that is currently played by Lerma, Gosling, Billing and, to some extent, Stanislas. That said, I’ve always thought that, if Cook gets injured, we might struggle as we don’t have another player like him.

The key point being that it only makes sense if JW can be certain of some sort of game time with us really. If that is not on the cards ( and I doubt JT will be able to give him any assurances in that regard ) then he might as well just stay and train with us for free. He gets fit and we get somebody who could be a positive influence on some of our own players. I can see the win/win in that. The other option only really makes sense for us and him if we feel that he will get plenty of opportunities to play. That is a slightly tougher one to call.

Just been looking at his number of games while with us and after.

Eddie and JT got a good number of games with Wilshere playing.

Then back to Arsenal and a good number of games during this season.

Then his time at West Ham not so good.

I'd play him as the front prong in a midfield three. Tidy on the ball, good dribbler, can find space and hold it up for others and can pick a pass for the runners. He'd also be a good foil for the two wide players in a way Billing, Lerma or Gosling can't quite manage.

You’d imagine he is a long way short of match fitness at the moment.

The only issue we had with him last time around was he was about fifth choice in a midfield two.

In a midfield three he was often excellent and raised the players around him up.
If a midfield three is going to be a regular system id sign him if the wages are right.

If we're now set on playing midfield 3s then Wilshere becomes very useful if we can fit his wages in.

I'd worry about having all quite fragile players in Danjuma, Stanislas, Brooks, and Wilshere (not to mention King lately) on the books.

If we can sell King to create the squad and wage space, I think this becomes far more feasible.

How many assists did he provide in those games? I can't recall Jack scoring. Hit the post at Stoke.
He hit the post numerous times if I recall, was quite frustrating at the time!

How would he get on in the Championship? Less time on the ball, more time spent 'up in the air!' Has he played in the Champ before?

Why would we not play the best CM to ever wear the shirt?
I think there would be doubts about his current fitness for a start. Then his injury record which has been poor in the PL. You could argue that he is much more likely to get knocked about in this league than in the PL, which would be an additional worry.
Finally JT would have to see a role for him to play in our current squad which depending upon other injuries and style of play may or may not be deemed likely to arise.
The current arrangement is win/win for both parties so unless there is a way for us to sign him without jeopardising that then it probably won't happen. Or somebody needs to take a punt, which of course might happen.

He'd be one of the most skilful English players under 30 ever to play at this level, so I'm not sure why we wouldn't be able to fit him in, particularly as we now have a manager that will play 3 in midfield occasionally.

Sign him up and see how fit he is against Oldham, as we'll obviously be resting half the squad so they're not cup-tied :throw:

His legs have gone. Injuries have taken their toll, I’m afraid that these days even at this level he’d just be a passenger. If he was at or even close to his 2016 level for sure but he simply isn’t, out of interest how many commenting on his signing have actually watched him play at all in the last couple of years?

Well, that's told everyone! ;-)

Instead of the smart remark how about you answer the question sunshine. Have you actually seen him play since he left us? If you haven’t then you are probably not well placed to comment
I haven't seen him play, but then if you look back at the comments since the news about him training with us you'll see I haven't commented!

But seeing as you've told me I can't comment, I'd just like to say that if JT thinks he's worth giving him a go that would be ok. I understand why others might not want to see him though, but at least they aren't so dismissive!

Sunshine!

Out of interest, have you?
