Non Emma Raducanu

Back in the day West Hants club used to host a great tennis tournament. Sponsored by Rothmans. I saw and met many great players. Billie Jean King was lovely, Virginia Wade snotty. Ille Nastase was terrific. Good days.
British Hardcourt Championship. I stood outside one evening hoping to sneak in as Rod Laver was playing.

How come we can't hold of these things? No major tennis at West Hants, cricket stripped from Dean Park....

Had the UK snooker championship for a time too.

Bumped into John Higgins in Jumping Jacks one night after he had been knocked out early. I’d had a few so kept challenging him to a game of pool (despite there being no table).

Remember him taking it well and buying me a pint...probably the last thing I needed at that stage...

I know. My Mate went one afternoon session and his boss saw him on the TV.
Sacked.
He worked for Curry's, so his face was on about 40 TV screens in the shop!
Daft b'stard

Two of my pals snuck in through that fire escape into the practice area and started having a game on one of the practice tables. It was an impromptu idea so they had no cues and had to use the massive ones that come with the rest under the table. They said they saw Ken Doherty and someone else I can't remember before they got booted out.

Wonder why they took it away from Bournemouth.

Not sure if this has been mentioned without looking back through the thread, but remember another Canadian born tennis player who represented us by the name of Greg Rusedski.

...didn't Jimmy Connors once play at West Hants in the early 70's?...sure I got in there once and he was playing...my memory has gone!..the last time I went there when I was a tad older it was Buster Mottram...John Feaver and the like with not so many star players..

Shaky territory and only make these distinctions when it comes to international sport .
But very different circumstances though. I think he even had an English parent? But because he’d represented Canada first and had a clear Canadian accent it all felt a bit forced. Cynically just felt like he could make a better career out of being one of the best Brits rather than just an also ran in Canada.
Could be very wrong though but that’s how it felt at the time.

At least with Emma she’s lived here since being a baby/toddler and was brought up in England so is very much a Brit in my view.

...ironically Emma got knocked by a Croatian with Aussie nationality who lives in Florida?

Let's be honest we have had some less than great 'pretenders' to being GB like Zola Budd...Colin Dowdswell...but also some successes like Lennox Lewis....Johanna Konta etc...
