If youth players were good enough they would get picked. Or do managers think that they'll wind up the fanbase by purposely not picking them? And every 'expert' on here, who doesn't see them train, claims they should be picked. Any player not playing should be whenever we lose a game.

I don't think it's always that simple. To be 'good enough', they need some match time to develop. There is also the pressure on managers to play the expensive players - prove that they were right to bring them in, which sometimes gets in the way or younger players being given a proper chance.

In my opinion, Kilkenny should have been given a chance in 2019-20 when let's face it, very few of the team were playing well enough but Billing, Lerma and H Wilson had been pretty big buys/loans. I think Surridge could have more of a shot than he had when Solanke wasn't finding the net. I also think Anthony is good enough for much more game time but whether he gets it or not remains to be seen.

Need a decent keeper and CCV, we'd be mad to not sign these 2 positions with just Cook(?), Kelly and Mepham left and possibly a winger/forward of severe quality if Arnie goes and it would be quite clear his replacement wouldn't score 17 goals and get 7 assists so he would be irreplaceable and we would be looking at low mid table near relegation without Begovic and Arnie gone who must''ve got us 20 odd points last season. Marcondes may come good but the stats don't lie he got 4 goals for Brentford last season 1 in the playoff final.

Agree with 1st para, but not sure about 2nd one. Interesting that Kilkenny hasn't gone out on loan. Indicates 'nearly' good enough for our 1st team, but not quite there. As the years go by and not playing regularly he has less and less chance of fulfilling his potential. You mention playing him in the PL, but as he hasn;t played much in this division since, not sure how well that would have worked out.

Overall I'm not a fan of taking risks on young players when we don;t need to - the fact he's barely played under any manager shows he's not quite there? Surprised he hasn't been loaned out by now. If he was that good or just a run of games away from becoming a very good player at this level, I'd have thought he'd have been given more game time by now.

I'd rather sign younger players from PL clubs, permanently or on loan, then loan out kilkenny, anthony etc (assuming they're not just a few games away from becoming 1st team contenders with us). Then if we don't go up, next season if kilkenny has developed his ability through regular league 1 football, keep him and use him in the squad. If he hasn;t developed, loan out again. When he returns, and heading towards mid twenties, move him on if he still hasn;t improved - this is assuming we haven't been relegated. If we have he'd be a key player, potentially. If we get promoted and he hasn't improved, may be better to sell.

Basically, if a player is good enough, or few games away from being a useful player keep him. If they need half a season or 2 years, but we feel they have potential to help the club meet its aspirations/ambitions, loan out to get the experience, raise their game etc. We don;t need to take risks bedding unproven young players who aren;t currently up to standard.

Kane was mentioned recently, he went out on loan several times before breaking into the 1st team. I imagine Kilkenny, Anthony etc are on relatively low wages, so we can cover half, most or even all of their wage - if the loan experience helps them realize their potential it doesn;t matter - it could be seen as an investment and relatively small/low risk one in the scheme of the money we're involved with now. If by xmas they're tearing up league 1 we could recall if we felt they're ready to make an impact at the level we're at. Or let them continue to flourish and develop out on loan - its an ongoing evaluation process.
