England Squad

On the one hand we have people suggesting Southgate is crap for not winning trophies and on the other hand he should apparently be picking Lewis Cook. Love Cook but he's not likely to make a difference at international level.

LOL those defending his selections were probably fully supportive of Sven choosing Theo Walcott ahead of Defoe for the 2006 world cup.

oNE FoR tHe FUtuRE...

Its nonsense. You take the best players who are on form, not always planning for the next and then the next and then the next tournament which is what we always seem to hear about the England selections.

Owen in 1998, Rooney in 2004... It won't always work but it can do. If the alternatives aren't deemed to be good enough then go with youth.

I'd choose Mainoo over Cook tbh. All about opinions of course mate ;)

One is 27, in his prime, has lifted a world cup, showing leadership and nerve in a tournament environment and has also played against some of the best midfielders in the world in the premier league with 126 appearances.

The other is 18 and has player 15 professional football matches.

Who do you take to a major tournament as backup?

England have more than enough quality midfielders to fill two squads before they'd need to look at picking Lewis Cook.

Call me cynical but Mainoo can also play for Ghana. I like Cook but come on he's not going to be an England international.

What a surprise that our own fans who wanted Cook gone from the team ages ago and now begrudgingly accept they might have been wrong all along, dont think hes good enough. Im really surprised. Shocked I tell you.

So you'd pick Mainoo?

Yes. I doubt you'd find anyone other than Bournemouth supporters who would pick Cook... and tbf most Bournemouth supporters wouldn't pick Cook. If he didn't play for Bournemouth you wouldn't pick him, in fact you'd cry foul if he was picked ahead of another of our players.

If you had agreed with me I would have fainted.

SDD...how many minutes have you watched Mainoo for...be honest?

Southgate is fecking useless. With the amount of talent he has had in the squad over his tenure I would suggest that the results of the team have been below par. He should have won at least one of those tournaments. Accepting a semi-final or a final as 'success' is just an England mentality problem. Would Germans or Brazilians or the French have thought this? The truth is that England have underachieved under Southgate. His negative tactics and god awful in game management ensured that we failed, yet again. I have seen this argument from others many times before. Southgate is, apparently, our most successful manager ever. Really? You can prove anything with statistcs. But if you watch the games and see how he wasted the chances that England were gifted, the true story is there for all to see. Southgate has 'achieved' very little. The players got England into those semis and final, DESPITE Southgate.

As I said, Southgate IS fecking useless. Which top club would have him? Would we want him here?
So the Germans, Brazilians and the French would not accept only reaching a semi or a final as a success? I guess we could add the Spanish, Argentinians, Italians, the Dutch and possibly now the Belgians to that ever growing list of world beaters?
The point is only one team can win.

I dont mind being alone in this but history of the world cup winners seems to agree with me...you take a team to win that tournament! You are not building a team for the years ahead. You are not building a squad to play together for 9 months and maintain a performance you are picking a group of players to play for 3 weeks once every couple of years. Pick those in form and stop this nonsense of taking players for experience because they MIGHT be picked years down the line.

I've seen a bit of him but I am 100% picking a young promising player when there's a risk of him being snapped up by another national team over someone who is 27 and you know exactly what you're going to get. Cook gets in if there's loads of injuries. Mainoo gets courted and an early chance to show what he can do. Cook was that young player who got a chance once don't forget.

Ah! So its simply to secure his status?

And also this isn’t the final squad for the Championships of course.

He might not make the final selection yet .

Precisely. Lewis Cook isn't ever going to turn into a world beater from here. He may have done without the injuries but that isn't how it panned out unfortunately. Mainoo may or may not reach the very highest level. Picking ho for England at a very early age may give him that boost to help with that who knows?

Partly, also partly because the payoff from picking him is potentially higher as it was with Owen and Rooney. Presumably you think Sven should have taken Michael Ricketts to Euro 2004 ahead of Rooney?
lol What a strange example. Rooney was already Evertons best player with a full season of Premier League football under his belt in 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 He had around 70 professional appearances by the time the Euros came around and 18 goals in the season leading up.

It doesn't matter. Mainoo is an extremely highly rated youngster whose potential seems to be sky high. Jude Bellingham was picked under similar circumstances. You're here arguing that Lewis Cook should be picked instead.
