Toney and Watkins are probably, ultimately, going to be ahead of Solanke for now.
Personally, I feel like Solanke is a character that you’d want in a squad. Very hardworking, unproblematic, been through all the youth setups. Plus, I think his style of play is the most similar to Kane’s. So in terms of having a player to actually deputise for Kane, I don’t see anyone doing that job better. Toney isn’t really a runner (though his range of passing and technique is very good), and Watkins is just as much a pacy wide forward (not dissimilar to Rashford).
I think it’s also a bit unfair for Solanke’s season to be discounted by the setup, at the expense of a noted prick that flouted betting rules and has barely had a kick this year. He’s the form “pure” striker in the league. I think he should’ve been given a chance. I wouldn’t discount penalties for the sake of an argument necessarily, but him having the most non-penalty goals is a very decent argument for his play being of a high quality.
