European Super League

So both Juventus and Barcelona knocked out of the Champions League already. Makes you wonder why they were both so keen on a so-called super league.
I heard recently that Barca's imminent early exit from the CL would hurt their already wonky finances. Due to how they are and have been borrowing against expected future income, any dent in that expected income such as an early exit from a lucrative competition digs their hole that bit deeper.

Wonder if Neto has any mates Mr Foley could inquire after ;)

From Twatter,

"Ben @_Ben_1993 2h
Those 5 teams are still far bigger clubs than some of the dross in it.
The CL will never be a super league without us…"

Yet, with all that dross, they still can't qualify.

"Super league, you're having a laugh."

bet notts forest are commenting on their absence given their history zzz

So basically joining the ESL would mean having to give up participation in domestic leagues and European competitions like the CL ( because presumably UEFA member leagues would veto any club joining the ESL whilst remaining in their current leagues and competitions ).

Hard to see that making too much financial sense, if I've interpreted the likely ruling correctly. Basically it's "go it alone, start a new league, see if you can convince anyone to put all of their eggs into your basket or just STFU".

Good !

Additionally, players wouldn’t be allowed presumably to be registered for UEFA competitions which would instantly end their international careers if they signed for such a club if they did push on regardless.

The main thing is that the clubs are unlikely to enter the ESL because they are being clearly told that it is UEFA or the ESL but never both. There will be no having your cake and eating it.
The players can still leave and go and play in the ESL if they like, that's totally up to them. It will be sh*t but they can go and do it.
But yes, presumably, apart from it being sh*t, they would also no longer be eligible for any UEFA/FIFA international competitions, which might influence their decision to go over there or not.

Should the ESL ever happen I think it is likely to be a mix of desperate current teams ( hello Spanish/Italian "giants" ) and new franchises. I think it would very quickly become a retirement home for ageing players looking for one last big payday, a bit like the US League used to be.
It will be doomed to fail IMO.

I wouldn’t rule out Real Madrid still going for it. Juventus under the old board would have still pressed ahead as well. Their business models in their domestic leagues are shot and they cannot compete with the Premier League… but if they can’t sign players who still value international competition…then that’s an additional hurdle added.

Sorry, added to my previous post ( last paragraph ! ).
Exactly, those desperate enough and new franchises might still go for it.

Easy solution. Let real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus go off and form their "super" league (European Super League) as these are the biggest clubs in the world (as proven by the huge piles of cash they each have in the bank). Their footballing superiority will be shown by not having relegation.

Then these three simply play each other each week from August until May, every year, forever. There will be full houses in the stadiums and a world-wide TV audience of 227 billion (using the same formula that Qatar used for counting attendances in the World Cup).

The winners of the league will be crowned as super champions, the runners-up as premier champions and the third placed club will be championship champions.

If that doesn't satisfy demand to see these giants play, there will be the ESL Challenge Cup, the ESL League Cup and the ESL Champions League (with guaranteed entry to the round of 3). The winners, runners up and third place of each of each competition will qualify for the European Super League Super Cup.

Each year, the winners of the European Super League Super Cup will play the runners-up of the European Super League Super Cup in the Super European Super League Super Cup.

Annually, there will be a match between the winners of the European Super League Super Cup and the Super European Super League Super Cup for the prestigious Super European Super League Super Trophy.

Cant wait...

Add Bayern to the mix. 10 consecutive Bundesliga titles and counting.
