I'm off

I haven't been in a winter since 2019 and long may it continue. Currently 25c days here. What courses are you playing there? Palmares is one of my favourites, I haven't played the links 9 by the sea though, they have 27 holes and the 18 you play is rotated.
We have an apartment next to Pinhal, 6 beautiful courses in the area. Laguna, Pinhal, Millennium, The Old Course, Victoria and Vila Sol.

Tenerife for three weeks late March, then Rhodes in October.
Any reason for choosing Rhodes, Rob? I’ve managed to get the Mrs down to a choice of Crete or Rhodes and today I find her looking at hotels in Kefalonia, I mean for god’s sake!

Try Koutoulofari in Crete Lots of tavernas over a couple of villages just above Hersonissos Pefkos in Rhodes was nice but last went ten years ago

They certainly supply 'the lines' in the UK at present.

They're kind of like the Amazon of the white powder world from what I've heard.

Sounds like my kind of holiday

I once did 3 weeks in the heroin capital of the world, the golden triangle.

Highlight was an incident a Heho airport that is undoubtedly the most frightening experience of my life to date

Way too long to go into it now, but I'm happy to bore anyone half to death with it over a pint

When in strange foreign countries be very careful......

Kefalonia is a lovely place for a holiday, as are all the Ionian Islands. I prefer them to Crete and Rhodes (as lovely as they are too) because they’re not arid. I think the beaches are better too, diving and/or sailing is definitely better and, other than perhaps Corfu, they’re not commercialised. And there’s always the Ionian breeze to keep cool.

ahah! golden triangle... memories.

I stayed a few nights in Chiang Mai... 'Rose of the North'. Nice place, respite from the intense heat of Southern Thailand. I recall my mate and me going to some kind of 'bar', and asking them to play tracks from 'Topgun'. Which they were happy to oblige!

We then headed to Luang Prabang and Vientien (sp?) for a few days before heading down the Mekong on a rudimentry boat. Stayed overnight in god knows where, with the power constantly cutting out. Mate and me and a couple of guys from Belgium (remember them talking about being from some city with famous library) huddled in this room with candles sucking on a pipe fuelled with this black goey stuff and a middle aged 'local' who couldnt speak English, who was laughing and smiling the entire time.

Helped us sleep anyway, as was starving .... couldn't stomach the 'stew' of this watery stuff with odd looking 'balls' and a random, sparse assortment of vegtables that was the only thing on offer earlier in the evening. Felt low a low budget scene from Apocolypse Now tbh.

Interested to hear your airport story mate :). Recall the anxiousness few months later, going through Bangkok airport 'checkpoints', after a night of no sleep and just alcohol. Felt like I had something to hide that they'd somehow find, even though I had just been drinking alcohol :D. Probably not helped by the fact I'd just spent 2 months in Koh Pha Ngan just about eating 1 meal a day, barely seeing any sunlight apart from sunrise, consuming more and more buckets of a weird version of vodka /redbull (flat, in bottles... apparently contains some ingredient not permitted over here...) and had just finished reading 'Damage Done'. book about Australian heroin drug smugglers serving time in Bangkok prison... what a superb choice, after finally reading Godfather by Mario Puzo. One of my favourite films, and the book was at least as good!

Crete is a favourite destination if you avoid some of the over developed bits. Fantastic mountain backdrops, great beaches and an unspoiled centre. Love the history, especially what SOE got up to in the mountains in the war. Take a good book on the subject and just imagine what went on up there.
Locals invariably friendly and generous. Greek food....amazing. Can't wait to go back.

Sorry for the delay. Dirty DC T the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth last night!

Our daughter found an accessible hotel in Rhodes hence the choice.

I went to Crete over 30 years ago with some friends from Dorchester and loved it.

I've only ever heard good things about Rhodes but we haven't managed to get there yet. Crete very nice though.

Says the tourist.
I love a moan about the grockles coming to Dorset every summer. But then I love popping down to Devon and Cornwall multiple times a year... where I guess I'm... kind of a grockle...
